Why so hard on rear pads ?

After 7300 miles my rear pads were looking decidedly worn ( probably another 1k in them) which suprised me as I am not a big rear braker but I know the linked brakes exagerate this.
Ant way working on the assumption that if the rears were shot the fronts wouldnt be too far behind I ordered a full set of Brembo sintered and have done the change. But heres the thing, the fronts, which to my mind carry the greater burden of stopping the bike, were hardly worn and probably good for another 15K.

I changed them any way as i couldnt be arsed to return the new ones !
 
The 1100/1150 bikes were always heavy on rear brake pads. My 1150, with linked brakes, could eat a pair in 5k

Absolutly. I have the impression that mild braking uses only the rears. I certainly get through at least 2 sets of rears to a set of fronts.
 
Have you actually compared your pads to a new set, when I went to change mine I found they were no more than 50% worn at 9k miles? The new ones aren't very meaty!

my buell (s3 thunderbolt) used to do a set of pad in 1500 miles round london, even on my ktm I would consider 7500miles pretty damn good.
 
Rear pads

My previous gsa 1150 and 1200 tc wore rears quicker than fronts,
The rears only have app 4mm material new,
My lc has sintered rears from new,,,

Mine were 50% worn at the 6k service a few weeks ago, but I checked them yesterday morning in Lake Garda after a week in the Black Forest and Alps and they were almost down to the metal. The BMW dealers in Trento managed to fit me in and fitted a new set straight away :beerjug:

The Michelin Pilot Road 4 Trail looks like it's nearly worn out after 3k miles.....

Same here 6k service rear pads 10% worn, pleased as new BMW pads now an amazing £79.00, won't to buying those !!!
 
New Brembo pads are 8mm of friction material on the fronts, and 7.6mm for the rears................ Just FYI.

Is that from measuring the pads or the specs, I actually took all pads out to measure/ inspect,
I put a vernier calliper on the new ones and the measurements matched, including the backing as an overall,
The backing is approx 3.5 mm, I am not sure the caliper space would allow the extra on top of the specs,
As has been mentioned there isn't much meat on from new,, not being pedantic,,they may do a thicker option to what's currently fitted,,
 
When I had my 1150 I learnt not to use the rear brake separately due to the linked servo system and the resultant rapid rear pad wear. That improved rear pad wear a lot. Of course when I stripped out the servo-ABS system I had to then remember to use the rear brake again:)
 
The linked brakes cause this. I NEVER touches the rear brake, but if I look on "My Bike" on the Navigator V, I see that I use MORE rear brake than front...

Funny you say that, as I've just been playing around with my Nav V, and have noticed exactly the same, even though I hardly ever use my rear brakes.

I have been led to believe that a gentle little squeeze of the front lever only applies the back as if in "a just settle the bike a bit for you guvnor before this bend" sort of a way
 
Don't forget the brakes are a big part of the stability and traction control system. My guess is that if you lot would ride at a more sedate pace instead of hooning about the rear pads would last a lot longer. Tossers.:blast

Redrick rides sedately, he even uses the front brakes gently!:D
