Why won't BMW make a decent gearbox ?

I guess if there were half as many actual owners of these bikes complaining of a fault as there are observers BMW might think the problem more worthy of further investigation

Phil,

You'll soon get told that your technique is all wrong, the WC is perfect and you can't have a duff one

Prepare for the onslaught, I feel your pain

Sorry you are having to endure it, when a new bike should be a joyous experience

Which is no different to the onslaught from the same old suspects who keep on telling owners of the LC GS's that their bikes are a pile of crap:rolleyes:

I'm prepared to bet that the gearboxes are all identical but the fault is in fact at the clutch, I've had many conversations with WC owners who fixed their appalling 'gearbox' by adjusting the clutch lever to give maximum throw. Problem solved ..... well not problem solved but problem diagnosed. I'm not saying that it's the right solution and BMW should be looking at the new design of multi plate wet clutch in this application as it seems to be unsuited to a boxer engine in it's current state.

I think you are right in that it is the clutch but I think it is possibly very poor quality control on BMW's part , with modern production every clutch should be identical , there have been lots of reports of loose nuts on clutches and also plates assembled in the wrong order etc so you would think that the first port of call for a bike that has reported gearchange problems would be for the clutch assembly to be checked , I may be mistaken but didn't somebody report that the loose bolt that was wearing camchains until they break was also something to do with the clutch?

I can't imagine how bad a BMW DCT might be!

My 2012 M3 had the DCT box. I didn't like it!

But that's how this place works, Steve. Most people take no notice of the observers on here.:comfort I've said it before; the pleasure is in knowing.;)

Is it fair to say that there's a difference between not liking the DCT gearbox and a gearbox that sounds like a bag of spanners and requires replacement or rectification?

I was wondering how long it would take for you to chirp up, Bob

The WC GS/GSA bikes are all great, it's just some of the owners who don't know how to ride BMW's finest, so it would seem

I don't exactly chip into these threads that often Johnny, which is the exact opposite to you and the other armchair detractors, who bang on ad nauseum about it.

So how many people say that people don't know how to ride them Johnny?

Engineer for a start, plus 1 or 2 others

I put you in the category, who does 'get the bike'

As for me, I had a go once or twice and it was ok.............................apart from that, I try to be objective nowadays - they can't be all bad, because BMW sell a shedload of them and some punters come back twice or 3 times, so that underlines how good the BMW GS WC really is

I have noticed that there seems to be an adjustment on the clutch lever where it pushes against the master cylinder piston. It should allow the lever to be moved to a better position. However there is a lock screw with red paint on it underneath the adjuster. Has anyone tried moving this adjuster? I don't want to break the seal just yet, otherwise it could void the warranty. I'll see what the dealer says about it.

The adjuster for the master cylinder piston is what you should use if the 1-2-3-4 wheel on the lever doesn't get the engagement point where you want it. Don't worry about the red paint, its just a locknut on the plunger. Loosen the locknut, turn the plunger to adjust, tighten the locknut back up. I adjusted mine about 13k miles ago to make it engage closer to the bar, has been fine. I'm not sure why you think messing with the clutch master cylinder adjusters would void the warranty on a bike that has a factory quick shifter option  Maybe I'm just not cynical enough about BMW yet.

I have never denied that some bikes have problems, but mine doesn't .
:)

On another thread you stated you have some clutch drag !! So your bike does have issues, obviously you have adapted your riding style to the drag and accept it for what it is.

Its interesting that many people have what could be described as significant problems, but then buy another one. BMW must be laughing all the way to the bank. Why would they improve the product when you all accept shoddy quality time and time over.
Incidentally, myself. I have what i like to call the ultimate boxer, a 2012 model RT. Last of the non toilet bikes. :D

For the record, I think the WC is a VERY good bike (just not for me) but what gets me is the blinkers that some seem to wear when it comes to the fact that this bike has serious issues. As I said in my earlier post, so did the early Hexheads (of which I had one). I loved mine BUT never denied the fact that it had some serious issues (such as a fragile FD).

Oh, and I have now ridden several WC's (test rides and friends bikes) so I'm no armchair detractor.

So will adjusting the clutch lever and changing my style of changing gear make my esa and switchgear work properly and stop my seat rucking up and splitting along the seams ?

I really love my GS but the gearbox is a bit poo compared to my KTM, but who really cares ;)

Me to , my 2005 exc has a better box , but there is nothing else out there which has a chassis so good , looked at the 1290 ktm , but come on , it looks shit and cumbersome .. IMHO . The LC is such a great bike , look past the box and the bike is awesome .

Correct, the 1290 does look a bit block like for me, GS is by far the better looking bike

My bike still ,even after all it's issues, is beautiful and still gives me smile every time I clean it , look at it and think .....god that's a great bike ..and it still likes me even when I thrash it to an inch of its life

Both my GS-LC's have had great boxes, am I the lucky one!:aidan

No - both my earlier 2013 and now my 2014 GSA have good boxes - just a bit a clunk going from neutral into first same as all the wet clutch bikes I have ever had :beerjug:
