Why won't BMW make a decent gearbox ?

Mine has some clutch drag, but so has every virtually every other wet clutch bike - the clunks and clacks that used to eminate around the bike meet at the Hartford Mill on a Tuesday night (before it burnt down) was something to behold.

so what is your point exactly?

Since the lock grub screw has red paint on it, I assumed it was a factory only adjustment. I think if it's field adjustable, the paint would be blue.

In any case if I did adjust it and there was another issue with the clutch - such as burnt or warped plates (which has happened to others) - then the first position BMW would take would be that fiddling with the adjustment caused the clutch slip, warping the plates. I could argue the point and may or may not win (probably not win), but I'd rather BMW did the adjustment and noted that in their work sheets.

I'm glad to hear that you adjusted yours and it worked. I'd have no problem doing it if it wasn't still under warranty.

2013 gs wc te..gearbox/clutch...awful..made the bike very unpleasant to ride...Back to the dealer on several occasions...no improvement.

Semi active ESA suspension..gave up the semi active bit at 3k mls...dealer says everything is OK...it was not.

Engine casings beginning to corrode at 4kmls...doesn't bear well for the rest of the bike in the future.

Looked at swapping for a 2015 model...that will be £4,700.00 thank you sir.

When asked why others appeared to be getting a much better deal than me i.e bikes being swapped very good p/ex deals ? was told the problem was I owned my bike and it was much easier for bmw to do a deal if the bikes were on some lease deal :nenau.

6k on the wc I'd had enough.

Swapped for a 2014 Guzzi Stelvio NTX...I love this bike it leaves the gs wanting in so many area's
6k mls on the Stelvio now,yes it has a couple of minor niggles,throttle snatch,and a bit lumpy round town but it's really got under my skin.

On paper it's not half the bike the gs is supposed to be but in the real world the gs cannot compare to the riding experience of the Stelvio.

All my opinion of course.

occasionally I read the sub-forums for the other bikes (eg , the KTM forum , since I also go offroading with a Husaberg FE450 and have a soft spot for them).

if you took it all too seriously , you'd end up (maybe) buying a Honda.

not sure about you , but I don't wanna buy a honda.

so , we buy these strange , expensive , annoying ... but brilliant machines from people like bmw , ktm , guzzi , etc , and its nice isn't it to have such wonderful equipment , electronics , power , safety etc , when even a couple of years ago , abs for bikes was a novelty.

long story short : bmw makes nice bikes. We continue to buy them , warts and all. Some even buy them one after another. At the end , people vote with their money and buy what they want. So go and buy what you want and be happy.

Whilst I agree with the general sentiment please don't group WMB in with the likes of Guzzi, KTM and Husaberg.........

I agree - I am on my third 1200GS and for me it is the only bike that does what I want/need a bike to do and it does it very well - they have all had there quirks, but it is worth taking a bit of time to adapt and then you reap the benefits, if you don't want to put in the effort then perhaps the GS isn't for you, I'd suggests a Honda Crossrunner or what ever they are called.

Perhaps the next generation of GS won't do what I want and I'll go buy something from another manufacturer, but for the moment the LC does very nicely thanks - even with a bit of clutch drag ;)
 
Again opening for another company to make bits for a bike for it to work correctly :blast it amazes me they can make so many mistakes :rolleyes: from an engineering prospective there must be a flaw in tolerances between manufacture causing this,if all bikes where the same it shouldn't happen :rolleyes:

If you mean the Crosstourer then no thanks. Been there, done that, totally underwhelming and not a patch on the GS. And not without its issues either.

I'm shallow and to me bikes are all about sex and girls and speed and pain - Guzzi, KTM, Husaberg are all bikes that fit well with that ethos, they are bikes with 'character'. They are 'cool'.

MBW does not fit with any of that :)

I doubt whether it is manufacturing tolerance thing because that would be trivial to fix - I suspect that most bikes are the same and there are just a few that are not made properly, after all BMW has sold tens of thousands of these things.

Our marketing 'bird' thinks my GS LC is cool and she is under 30 so they must be.

Well without stripping 2 or 3 of the problem engines then carefully checking the parts no one will know for sure ? Id not touch one myself it'd be a KTM if I brought new,why do you think so many used less than 1 year or 2 LCs on the market ? maybe some don't like to admit they made a mistake & quietly get rid.
