Lookslike the cold snap we've just had has killed off my bateery........ Can I charge it through the left-heel side accessory socket?

I guess it's battery, turned on ignition, clock and LCD display flickers and then a low howl "errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" starts from the ABS?? Indicators don't work but have dim headlight and brake light....

Balls!

yes you can charge it through the socket youll
get a plug to fit it from john deer tractor sales well thats where we get them here anyways

I've got a plug already on a cable of about a foot in length, need to cut it and fit a couple of male connectors then I can connect it to the charger instead of the croc clips it has now.

The bike's not bene used for about four weeks and usually I don't have this problem.

The noise that I think is the ABS trying to fire up is quite unnerving... "errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" and the red lights flickering away.

Dont forget that your socket will be fused, if you are using a car type charger (high current ) the fuse may blow. Better to go for a lower charge rate. Don't charge at over 10% rated output either. 32Ah battery at no more than 3.2A

i was always told to disconnect the battery when using a high current (car type) charger as it can damage the regulator/rectifier if you don't.

any thoughts?

connect the charger positive to the starter terminal, and earth on the engine, - you can also connect jump leads to the same points -

thanks all, now we're getting a bit technical with starter terminals and all that....

I'll have a go through the socket and see what happens.

I have one of these that I have used in the car and it seems to have done fück all for the bikes battery.... It seemed to keep the old Alfa battery topped enough to turn the engine over after weeks of not being used and wa salmost a permannet fitting on the back parcel shelf summer or winter!

This is the quickest way. Remove the plastic cover where your accessory socket is One or two screws. Jump start it from there. Takes about two minutes rather than fiftenn to remove the tank..

i'll go looky looky in the morning, be dark when I get home now jump leads........ may have to invest there too!

I have the same problem

They told me they need to change the electrical instllation of the bike

Well it's charged but still won't start.

Been on charge for a while and the Halford's charger shows the green light indicating that battery is "ready"....

Disconnect charger. Insert key. We have lights, the ABS has settled down now more "errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr", press starter..... and all the startermotor does it clatter as though it's slipping a bit and then nothing happens and the clock and everything resets and that's all folks....?

Any more ideas? Starter buggered?

My 1100 did this when battery flat.ABS always the first to go.Buy an Optimate and plug your bike in when not using. The connector can be plugged straight in at left heel socket. No problems since

Did you get a set of jump leads then? If so, jump it off a car. If it starts your battery is buggered, if it still won’t start then possibly starter motor or possibly something else. I had the same situation on my bike last year. Battery would charge – green light on the charger but bike still wouldn’t start and made a horrible clicking noise. Jumped off the car, started, went and bought a new battery all sorted.

Good luck.

DrAlf - Yep, horrible clicking/rattling/whirring from starter ......

I took the charger option first (as I already had one!) and it hasn't worked.

Looks like a run to Halford's this afternoon and get some jump leads. Balls! Need to sort it today as I am at work all week and Le Touquet beckons next weekend.

Great suggestion about getting an optimate and I have considered it, but my garage is 30m away (that's the length of the trailing lead from my kitchen window to the garage next to the bike) and I doubt my neighbours woild put up with a cable permanantley across thier dives.

I hate to say it, but I think your battery's a goner.

I suggest you take a look at the thread at http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31530 where the symptoms sounded terribly similar.

Sorry I didn't spot this earlier and stick this pointer on then...

I think you are right. Had it running for about 15 minutes, turned it off, refitted the starter motor cover and ran in to get togged up for a ride... Wouldn't start.... Looks like battery is shot.

Thanks for all the help guys and gals, it makes it all worthwhile being in a club/group such as this.

Now I have to work out how to get to Prestige for a new battery on a bike I can't be certain can get there once I have started it on the jump leads...... To add to the misery, they aren't open til Tuesday.....

Have filled the tank to make certain I don't have to stop for petrol.... so might make it in one hit.....

Once again thanks to eveyone that gavce advice. I've just got back from Prestige with a new gel battery fitted.

Jumped the bke from the car and thwn rode up, ABS lights flashing, indicators haywire, rough running and the fuel going down at an alarming rate....

Coming back, all is good, plus a legal speeds the first bar on the fuel gauge took 48 miles before it went out!!!

Also thanks to Steve and all at Prestige for the nice welcome and job dine in next to no time. I will be back.
