As per the title.

Does the XT2 unit fit the same mount as the XT1? I mean if you had the first version, would you need to change the mount for the XT2 (assuming you're rich enough to have two of these units!).

Cheers

No. different mount and power plug. that's what i've read anyway form those who have upgraded.

Yes it fits in the same mount and can be used in it as confirmed by Garmin

It’s like the Inquisition, questioning Galileo.

The original XT didn’t……

But hey, someone will be along to tell you that their mate has heard that someone read…….

Well if it helps you can get an adapter to make it fit :D

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback

Yes it does see

The new XT2 mount has a stronger spring on the catch and rubber bits on it to make the unit fit a bit better than the XT
XT2 is expensive so i made this to put a tether on it just incase it comes out the mount
I don't understand why garmin don't have a tether hole standard like a lot of other units
This gives me peace of mind and has also reduced the risk of dropping the unit when carrying it (y)

Voltage difference.
XT 2 does internal step down conversion (12 to 5v) so the XT2 can be mounted on the original XT mount as that one provides 5v already, as the step down converter is on the cable.

Inversely, you cannot attach an XT on the XT2 mount as the feed is 12v and the XT only runs on 5v.

I assume the non mutual ability to exchange mounts is down to the above.

Reports on Zumo forums of XT2 screen freezing, good old Garmin :)

Gents. Really Great info. Thank you!

My reason for asking is because I have finally got the patent on my locking device for the XT. It's lockable with a key and is super slim and lightweight. I have a number of Mki units sitting here - have been using mine for a year and I just love it, which is rare because I'm usually over self critical of my work!

But what's patented is the concept which is, of course, adaptable to different mounts - not just Garmin. I was wondering if there were any dimensional changes, but it seems not. Though very interested in the voltage management as presumably the new version makes wiring it in easier.

Currently deep into the manufacturing of these locking units, but I plan to either sell it to a distributer or become the vendor myself - the latter may prove the most expedient!!

One good thing about a lot of the newer Garmin units is they are very easy to remove
Therefore the best anti theift methord is just pop it off and take it with you
Leave it on the bike and a theif will only destroy it trying to remove it
That's why i have never used a locking mount

Spot on (y)

Coffee stop in the middle of nowhere in Germany…..

It takes but a moment to pop it off its mount, put into the map case on my small tank bag and take into a cafe. That I’ve also got it then with me, to play around with (usually to find out exactly where I am) is just a bonus.

Not really spot on. Not to me anyway.

So when you fuel up in a big service station, leave your bike next to the big white van with Bulgarian plates (also filling up) you take it off and carry it to the shop 50m away? Or you stop anywhere, briefly, you take it with you?

Sounds like a pita to me. Personally I got fed up with that, especially once you've got a sun visor fitted onto the unit - double pita to carry and responsible for numerous drops of the unit. And the XT2 is bigger still?

No lock is going to be fool proof/ theft proof, but if someone clearly sees it's locked on, then instantly it delays everything or in fact prevents an attempt entirely... Additionally, there's something called peace of mind...of which I've had for over a year now . I get it not everyone would be interested, maybe the same people not interested in having an alarm on the bike . But living in London wakes you up to just how many opportunists are actually out there, everywhere!

Same as me. It's not locked on & left to disappear for a few hours. It's locked/left on when popping into the petrol station, a sandwich shop, sitting a bench a few metres from the Bike etc etc. Much easier than removing/ put in pocket / remove / reinstall. There's already enough faff on a Bike with gloves, keys & other bits than adding the satnav into the equation.

That's kind of where I got to. With gloves, keys, wallet, maybe the phone too... If I can leave the unit on the bike knowing it's not a doodle to get off, I can relax
