Having fitted the conversion this week I rate it as one of the top three mods to the GS.
After nine years and four GS's, two 1150s and two 1200s, I had sort of got used to the fact that the lights were terrible on unlit roads. OK-ish with main beam on, but the moment oncoming traffic forced you on to dip everything vanished except a small pool of yellow light about 30 ft in front of the bike. Anything could be lurking beyond, from a dead fox to a missing manhole cover. Even on familiar roads it meant dropping down to 40-ish.
However the HiD lights produce a bright long-distance beam which properly adjusted does not disturb either oncoming traffic or stuff you come up behind. It makes a huge difference.
If you don't ride much at night, especially on unlit roads, you could easily get by without it. But if you do I fully recommend it.
I got mine from Les Wassell who needs no introduction here. It was a full kit, ready wired with the ballasts already bolted to his specialist bracket. It took this mechanical idiot just over an hour to fit with no problems.
(BTW I have no connection with Les other than as a customer)

my little 100 mile round trip commute makes it such a joy to be able to see sooooo much now
