Hi Guys

Not very mechanically minded but curious before I head to local bike shop or worse BM dealer.

Last night 2 x 30 mile rides - no problems not blasting, sitting at 60 as simply out for a pootle

This morning 3 or 4 miles into my 10 mile commute to work. Loss of power, turn throttle, still no power. Change down gears, bike actually stalls. Hit starter (while still coasting) bike re-starts. Runs normal for 1/2 mile or so same thing does this about 5 or 6 times. On each re-start the bike appears to be normal and gets back upto 60 and 6th gear no problem but hen dies and no response from throttle. Get to the 30 mile commute section no apparent problems. Arrive, park bike up onto centre stand and slight smell of singeing/burning, maybe unconnected but thought I mention it.

Bike is a 54 plate GS, I've had for 2 months, had 37K on it when I bought it and I have done over 3 and 1/2 K on it. There should be about a gallon or just over of fuel left in tank, according to my trip reading

Thoughts as to cause?

Neil

when was the last time you filled up?

Have you tried putting fresh petrol in and seeing if that helps?

It could be something like a dodgy batch of fuel which is clogging up the fuel filter, injectors etc, or something more serious.

As for the burning smell, unless it was strong I wouldnt worry too greatly. Deposits from the road landing on the exhausts will burn up and create a stink, but not a strong wifff.

Clutch slippage on the other hand...

Hi again

Bike gone to well knowledgeable local guy who has drained off petrol (only 1/2 gallon ish) which may have led to air being drawn in. He has refilled with new petrol. Will take for test tonight.

Anybody have idea of the cost of a fuel relay? and I assume it is main dealer only?

Another thought crosses my mind, fuel "countdown" warning wasn't on when I rode to mechanic but half a gallon drained off would be at most only 30 miles, doesn't countdown cut in around 45/48

I had a similar problem about a year ago. Issue was the fuel pump relay. I got it fixed under warranty, but I'm sure that I read somewhere on the forum that they cost about £6.

The relay is under the circular plastic cover (the one with holes in it that lets water in), which is under the nearside tank panel. Shouldn't need a main dealer to fix.

£6 for a BMW part!!!! Never  Add a nought and you'll be in the right ballpark :D

04/05 GS
the seal leaks on the fuel pump and fills with water ,shorting out the sender unit ,go to your BMW dealer should mod it for you , jet washing some times fills the pump , or heavy rain, :tears

Update

Bike ran home workshop with no problems. Ok only 10 miles or so but totally fresh fuel "seems" to have sorted, so ozzy seems to be along the right lines as I presume water in the fuel pump seems the most likely cause. So may need trip to dealer to fix, anybody have an idea of cost or should it be done as a recall? Do dealerships have a note of what recalls etc. have been done to each bike?

Neil

BMW Customer services will have a record of what recalls have been done and if any are outstanding. You will need to give them the last 7 digits of your VIN.

140 miles today no problems, so looking more and more like contaminated petrol. Will check with dealer for recalls

Thanks for your input guys

Neil
