Just heard from the dealers after my 1200 expired near Newtown at the weekend. Dropped valve = smashed piston etc. 16000 miles FSH. Recommended short engine replacement. Has anything similar happened to anyone else here?

(Take all 1200 jokes as read)

Neil:tears

Don't get it fixed. If you have the time, sell the rest of the bike in parts and buy a new one. It'll be cheaper methinks. The 07 bikes are better anyway

Pist n Broke

Won't be going anywhere for a while...

Not sure

It let go as I was accelerating to pass a car but that is not unusual. No warning signs that something was amiss that I was aware of.

The good news was nothing locked up and nothing came out of the engine and no one hit me as I decelerated and pulled into the curb. Could have been many times worse for me.

Awaiting BMW UK response

Right now the photos from the dealer are with BMW for them to decide how they want to proceed. The dealers are waiting to hear from them before anything else gets done. Watch this space.

If Mbw don't do it for nothing(you never know)selling it in bits sounds like quite a good plan,as long as you can afford the time to get rid of the bits, then get a good 1100.

Sympathy and beer available here if you need it(except the sympathy)and you can cheer yourself up with the ever deepening engineering pit that is the Donkey....It will go again:beerjug:

Blimey, that's a mess  Glad you came out unscathed physically.

Hope BMW do the right thing by you on this one - certainly would appear there must have been some manufacturing defect given the account of what happened.

By the way, as a matter of interest - and not so sure I really want to know the answer - but does anyone have any idea of the cost of a new replacement engine?

Peter

I was wondering that too

If you add labour etc it can't be far off the cost of a new engine - can it? Still waiting for them to do an estimate.

Yeah Vern,
If you you were sympathetic I would die of shock:eek: - but beer helps:beer:

1) Have you owned it since new?
2) Has it been dealer serviced since new?
3) By the same dealer?

These are critical questions for BMW when assessing such a potential claim out of warranty. :rob
