I have a standard GS but it's been fitted with a GSA screen and seem to have a problem with buffeting. I am 6'4 and its quite load at speed due to the wind coming off the top of the screen - when I dip my head lower it's almost silent, so I am guessing that I either need a higher screen, or a lower one?

Can anybody give me some help with reducing buffeting? Is it worth getting a screen extender or simply replacing it with the standard GS one?

Lower screen to create a less turbulent stream of air onto your helmet. Bigger is not always better!:rob... though the mrs doesnt agree for some reason

Owmigawd...

Once you start reading about screens (or oil, or tyres), you'll be in front of the bl**dy computer for ages. Far too many opinions and variations to get a definitive answer.

A couple of principles do emerge however. For most people, buffeting is caused by turbulent airflow onto the helmet. So you have to get rid of that, one way or another. How you do that is the tricky part...

Tobinators get a pretty universal :thumb. Question is, do you keep your Adventure screen and get (expensive) Tobinators, or buy cheaper Tobinators and a replacement screen?

My money goes on the latter as I'm not convinced about the inherent aerodynamics of the Adv screen. At the risk of offering an opinion :eek :eek :eek, I'm 6'2", but have a long torso, so probably sit at about the same height as you in the saddle. For me, a combination of standard Tobinators and a tall Z-Technik screen has proved perfect (for the last 5 years). Screen available from Z-Technik UK - the one you want is ZT-Z2240.

Make a huge pot of coffee, set aside an entire day, put yer feet up and do a search on the site for 'screens'.

You'll learn more than you ever wanted to know...

Thats not a screen , this is what you need a good riot shield .At 6ft.5 i can still se over it .

:D I justy fitted Tobinators to my stock GSA screen and instant bliss.....
I also cut of the "clit" on the screen adjusters to give me more height and it works well...
gets my :thumb2 for sure !

Geno...

That's not a screen.

That's not a riot shield.

It's not even a wwwwwwindshield.

It's... it's... bleedin' enormous, that is!

Get low flying aircraft doing a bit of slipstreaming, do we? ;)

you could experiment a bit. :rob mine don't look much but there is no buffeting and it keeps my visor clean.

I remember that there was a mod where a small triangular section cut about a third up the screen reduced the pressure differential that causes bufferting, but searched and cannot find the details, anyone know where it is ? i would like to try this mod on my ADV as its much more noticeable with my new shoei helmet

I have just replied to a similar thread in the 850/1100/1150 section. I had a standard screen, then standard + Tobinators, then MRA Vario (No Tobins) for two years, now have a standard GSA screen + Tobinators which I consider is the best yet!
I am 5' 7" and have a Sargeant seat. I find the extra width of the GSA screen takes a lot of the pressure off my chest and the Tobinators remove the helmet buffeting.
Just another persons view........good luck with your decision!

6'7, R1150GS, Adventure screen, Tobinators but the sweet spot was just out of reach, would have been ideal for 6'2 to 6'4........ So I fitted winglets, 50% reduction in buffeting, more pressure on forearms....... Don't think I can do any better.

I did a couple of hundred miles this week mainly motorway and remembered just how bad the bufferting is after a winter lay off.
I am 5'10 Adv std seat, if i adopted a slightly crouched riding position it was much better but very uncomfortable, so i had to do something.
Torbinators are out of the question at the moment as i am not working, so is a new screen, so i took the screen off the bike, with the aid of some cushions placed it on my work bench, held it down with a couple of bungies, and with a vernier scored a line 13 mm up from from the bottom edge of the screen.
I cut this strip off with a jigsaw and clean up the edge with sand paper, the idea being that a bit more air flow under the screen may move the bufferting.
I am pleased to report that i can now sit up straight and ride without the bufferting, it still has the wind noise with 'dirty air' from the screen but i guess thats always going to happen ? ie if i stand up at 80 wind noise goes away but then get full force of the air on the body.
Until my finances improve it will have to stay that way, or until i gav get a ride on an ADV with torbinators
