Looks like I have managed to partially pursuade by better half that a trip to the Artic circle would be a great idea :thumb

However, we've only got two weeks and whilst I'd be happy to be on the bike every day :bounce1 SWMBO would not. So, is it possible to do the Newcastle-Bergen ferry, get up to the Arctic Circle and back in two week AND have a good few days in one place to chill.

A tall order I know but I trust you lot to find me a way

Why not? A mate of mine did it in two weeks on a Suz GP100 so a big butch GS should be able to make it?

Norway

Hi Timbo,

First off, I haven't been.....however, there's 2 of us travelling this
summer to the Nordkapp. Once we get off the ferry at Haugesund we'll
have 12 days of riding. I'm hoping to get up there in 4 1/2 days and similar on
the return leg...giving us some time for some trips in the SW of the
country. Loads of posts on this...stick 'Norway' in the search
and it'll throw them all back.
Artic Circle is much further south than Nordkapp so 2 weeks
should easily be achievable.
Booked our ferry crossing in January (Newcastle - Haugesund)..cost
us £235 each. Same cost to Bergen.....it's the same ferry stopping
at Stavangar and Haugesund before Bergen.

Gordo'

ps. a small point but I haven't got my bike yet !!!

Mine's a pint.............an extra cold one !

I know that it's been a while since you posted, but a quick note just to say that I did an Arctic trip last year and it was BRILLIANT! Newcastle-Stavanger-cross the Arctic Circle in Sweden-Nordkapp-Russian Border-down through Finland-cross the Baltic back to Sweden - Goteburg-Newcastle in 10 days. Roads were mostly really good, Scandinavians all friendly. I'd say that my trip would be too uncomfortable with 2-up, but you can comfortably get to the Arctic in 3 days riding.

Arctic Circle and Nordkapp!

Newcastle -Haugesund, cross country to E6 then up to the Arctic Circle staying in Hytta huts or camping, made it to the Nordkapp in four days think we made the Arctic Circle on the third day late morning. Made the Nordkapp on Ist of June, it was freezing, -7degrees at midnight or is that midnight sun!! :D Liv our resident Norway expert will advise you soon :D I don't think she likes the E6 road though!!!

Hi!

I think you can pick up a thing or two from Dutchman:
He rode from Bergen to Nordkapp and back in 18 days.
Here's that trip: http://www.dutchman.org.uk/2004_Rides.htm
I believe that is too much riding for a beginner (the pillon) so I'm glad you are not planning to go all the way up.
Bergen - Arctic Circle is far, but you can do it in 2 weeks, and still have time to stay at the same place for some days.

-Is the Arctic Circle that important?
If you make a search in my posts you'll find that I recommand to ride in the south west of Norway, and not go further north then Trondheim, specially if you like to not ride that many miles each day.

Buy maps for the south halves of Norway, scale 1:300 000, a good topograpical map showing the mountains and hills, and pick the narrow roads with hairpins, and I guess you can imagine there is a exciting nature!
Find a place to stay in the middle of an area you like, and ride from there every day - that way the pillon won't feel it is so hard; it gives here some freedom, and she can say; '' -I'm tired, let's relax today''.

Knut (k-nut) and me stayed at Lom for 3 nights, and we rode to Geiranger and Dalsnibba, and eat our packed lunch at a green field and looked at the view over Geirangerfjorden. Nice!

And once we stayed at a Hotel in Voss for 3 nights and rode up in the mountains (with my Scarver!) one day, and we rode to Gudvangen and played in the wery funny hairpin roads at Stalheim / Stalheimskleivene. Fun!

But if you really want to go to the Arctic Circle I can help you pick a route, but the main advice is, like said before here, are; do not pick E6 if there is an option!
And notice it takes time, a lot of time, to ride in Norway, specially if there are ferries, and if you want to see the nature!

Please ask me if you have questions - I'm glad to help!

:) Liv.

I'm sure you are the expert here Liv,

But a few years ago, my wife and I drove (a VW camper no less) up the coast to, then past, Bronnoysund (the place where the mountain with the hole in it is, and where my relatives come from).

Lots of little ferries, but man that stretch of coast road is sure soulfull!... We went as far North on the coast as the 7 sisters (a mountain range that begs to be hiked on), then cut over to the highway and came back south. Our original intent was to make the Artic Circle (we have friends in Boda), but ran out of time. The relatives in Bronnoysund took most of it, then the mountains finished it off! :bounce1

I'm going to be in Norway in June (going with Phillipe around the Southern bit that you recommend), but I plan to ride the coast all the way up to Nordkap one day... I'd love to see the Lofoten. :beerjug:
