it's a bugger aint it, i've been looking at this thread for ages trying to decide which panniers, some good pictures there but they seem massive, can't see how they'd go off road!!!

think i might bite the bullet & go for the BMW ones!!

Indeed... fat-a$$es on some of these .... :augie

The narrowest combo. I have seen is the 8" Jesses @ 33"
BMW Varios come in @ 36" (when collapsed)
The widest a$$ award goes to the big Holans @ 46"

I have a spreadsheet with the data... not sure how to post it intact...
most numbers I have scavanged from other places ... so this is not an "original work"
here is a cut-and-paste:

Width Brand Details / Vol ea. Vol. total (liters) Cost Wt. L/in.
33.00 Jesse 8” Safari 68 1,250 #N/A 2.06 L/in

36.00 HappyTrail 61L total cliff cut (others avail.) 61 823 #N/A 1.69 L/in
36.20 BMW Vario collapsed = 19L + 28L 47 1,050 #N/A 1.30 L/in
37.00 Jesse 10” Odyssey 90 1,150 #N/A 2.43 L/in

Yup theres a lot of choice and price vary a lot i went for the Jesse 96cm wide mirrors (with TTextenders) = 97cm so it mirrors fit so do I for filtering.

I went for the BMW vario top box expanded takes your Lid! they code the lock to yr ignition key so its just 1 key but wanted alli paniers, slim to the bike and black.

but if you have the funds its personal preference or what your purpose is for them it is also in some cases look better than others!:thumb

Blind Lemon Ade, the panniers hold only 21l each, probably enough for sensible two up luggage if you have indoor accommodation, they would be a bit too small for two up camping.

Ta muchly!

After years of draughty tents in race paddocks, my Missus doesn't do camping - so anything like that would be 1-up...

This picture shows my wifes luggage combination.

SW Mocheck QD Pannier frame £145.00
Givi 21 Panniers £95.00
Small Givi Top box £35.00
Mounting plate - 2 bits of 3/4" nb tube, extra long set screw and the Base supplied with the top box.

Sooty09:

I like that VERY MUCH - How wide is that set-up?

Thanks,
Jim

Hello lovely peeps.

Question- has anyone managed to fit, fettle or "farkle" (whatever the hell that means, Advriders) aluminium panniers to the BMW Vario racks?

Apologies if thats already been covered on this very long thread, but I lost the will to live after 15 pages or so.

I think 7 inches is more than enough btw, so weight shouldn't be an issue.....:popcorn

Thank you please.

Hello? Anyone?
Can anybody hear me?:pullface

I dont think you can, I've been looking to do the same. Local Dealer says that the BMW alloy box wont even fit the Vario top plate.

As far as the panniers go, i think the Vario rails dont stand out far enough to adapt any fittings fom the alloy boxes.

Im probably wrong on this, but I think the BMW rails and top plate are specific to (rip off) BMW panniers/topboxes.:(

Yay! I have a cybervoice!:clap:clap

Thanks for the reply Richie.etc. I see what your saying, and it would be fairly typical behaviour by the big blue propeller, but it feels like more of a challenge now. Got a thread over at advriders which finally has some interest fyi.
Think i'll do it anyway, make some or adapt some ammo cases or summink.:jeiger

To be honest I prefer the looks of the BMW Alloy boxes and top box, I realise that there are pros and cons for these and others, but I really like the look of alloy set up. Unfortunately I have the plastic varios and I'll be buggered if I am spend alot of moolah for the alloy ones when I dont really "need" them, the varios will have to do:( Any spare dosh is going on engine bars and a zumo:thumb

I'll have a look for your Advrider thread:thumb2

Fair enough. FWIW I went for the Adv Spec bars. I'll post some pics of my old banger next week when the nTwalcom bash guard gets back from the powder coaters and gets bolted up. I think it'll be more or less done then, till I've saved up fpr the Bitubo fork cartridges :drool and fettled me hard luggage.
All the best,

I've been looking at the Caribou / Pelican cases, and wondering if it's possible to source all the bits in the UK...

000169-01.jpg

You'd need a rack, say SW Motech or similar, £180 ?

a pair of Peli-Case 1550s as they're called in the UK, £126 each,

and a mounting kit, £50 a side from Touratech,

total £532. :eek

Oh, and a drill...

Does anyone else in the UK offer mounting kits for panniers ?

Je sais, incroyable

Thanks Si :thumb2

Why do you like soft bags to hard panniers? What kind of a racking system do you use? Which soft panniers would you reccomend?

To me looks as though soft luggage system with perhaps a tank bag is a winner on these bikes and is the solution I'd like to try for myself.

Cheers for your help.

Some of those panniers remind me of these :rob

:blast I dont know why :D

I currently have the SW Motech Alurack fitted, and alternate between strapping to it a waterproof roll-bag, and using a Givi top box with adaptor plate.

I can't decide between ortlieb panniers with SW Motech frames (still fairly wide), or hard panniers.

If I were to get Vario panniers, because I want to keep the bike's width to a minimum, how are they fitted to the bike? Would they interfere with how the Alurack is fitted?

Thanks in advance.

My Motech Trax panniers are now available separately from the rest of the stuff I had for sale.

Two 45L panniers, with frames and all locks. Second hand, frames slightly bent but no kinks and nothing that can't be eased back in to shape. Panniers have a few scrapes and grazes, couple of small dents, few stickers, but still in shape, still fit, still work.

The dent is on the bottom rear edge of the pannier.

I wouldn't put them on a new bike but for anyone wanting panniers to go go go then these are more than suitable.

The £250 asking price includes fitting and a night bed and breakfast at mine, if required. Otherwise buyer collects or delivered within reasonable distance :thumb
