► Tyre choices and emergency repairs

Never tried the Heidis so I can't comment on them but between TKC's and Karoos, Im in favour of the Karoos. Tried both on the 650 and there was next to no difference on the trails or tarmac. Both lasted for similar mileage and since the Karoos were about 30% cheaper, I'd happily have them again.

Ragnar, I'm looking for tyres too. What did you end up going for and where did you get them from? Thanks!

Wheres that track you got stuck on, I assume near Oxford?

I have an alternative idea, wait for it to dry out:thumb2

Scary how little it tales to stop a bike with road-biased tyres, I guess my 1200 on Tourances would have no chance, which is why I think I will stick to riding tracks like these in summer and run Roadsmarts as they will be fine on hard ground and great on the road.

That's not an alternative! :clap :clap

I think your 1200 would have the same chance as mine as the ground isn't too soft and/or too much up-hill as you'll have gravity against you. Obviously skill is required, so ask someone else than me to ride it. :augie

That track is just north of Silverstone Village. It was supposed to be our start to go do the Oxford Lane, or whatever it's called.

Are those Heidenaus buried under some secret stone..?

I've had a look at several sites, and wherever I can find the new Heidenaus they're about £30 less than TKC's. And that's not necessary the "right" sizes. What are the right sizes for knobblies? :blast :nenau

140/80-17 £84.60 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HEIDENAUTYRE-...24?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item41534326d8

.... anyone I've missed? http://motorcycleproducts.co.uk/ only seemed to have the "out of stock" items stocked.

So... :blagblah Anyone got an upside on this?

Mitas E-09 rear, TKC front.

pithy and to the point Argee! i've run the whole caboodle and within a few months of each other, and this combo wins hands down. the tkc front lasts an age on an 800 and the mitas rear is as good off-road if not better than the TKC, lasts twice as long, and is the cheapest tyre you'll find. one of the guys finnish guys i rode with in mongolia this summer was running heidi's beside my combo and he lamented the fact that he hadn't chosen the same. second to this i'd choose the heidi's, but only because i get about 3k miles out of a rear TKC.

I tend to get the TK's badly clogged if I go on a grass/mud area, mucho wheelspinning. No probs on gravel or tarmac though. About 3k out of the rear.

Just my pennies worth fellas

Just about to scrap my hiedi k60's after 5500 miles, still a bit of life inn them but squarer then a dice now, they have been a great tyre both on and off road although not that good on clay based dirt.
#
before that i had the karoo2 t which is almost like the tkc but cheaper and great on and off road. only got 2000 miles out the back though.

i have used tkc's on many bikes but the cost has put me off these days.

NOW THEN!!!! what is intresting is that Mitas (formally trellibourg) has a new tyre on the block, the E10 adventure, its a great price at around $80 for the rear and id being used by the bmw offroad skill so that must say somthing.
70% off road 30% 0n so its horses for courses,
i have always had big trail bikes and have to say knobblies on the road!!! whats the problem, you may feel a little movement but they will hold on much harder than our brains seem to tell us. they also keep you on your toes which can only improve your riding skills.
on that note, enjoy what ever you shod your steed in.:rob

Guys,

I think I (we) need some knobblies on our F800GS.... and I know the dangers about starting a tyre thread, but I thought I'd go for it anyway.

So, what's the low-down? Just go for TKC80s or is there some new flavour in town that's better?
Would be nice if the knobblies would be decent on-road as well as off-road too. Oh, and cheap, naturally. :eek

What sort of mileage are you getting from your knobblies?

Thanks!

Depends what you're going to use them for.

Tesco runs, posing ? Do you intend taking the bikes off tarmac....ever ?

He's out on the trails already, check out post 15 on the thread.

Thank you, much more than pennies worht in that post, fireman. Appreciate it. I'm going to have to look into Mitas (I was wondering why nobody was saying anything about Trelleborg as they've been in the dirt game for donkeys years, now I know why).
I do think I'll have to be frank with myself and tell me that I'll need something more like 70% tarmac and 30% off road, rather than the other way around, especially considering how long it would be between the by ways. :( But no worries, it's just one set of tyres.

The Mitas E-09 seems quite aggressive. Has anyone got an opinion about the E-09?

They're rated 50/50 for on and off road, but still look like they can cut a path in moderate mud and grass...

Wha'dya reckon?

Ragnar, I'm looking for tyres too. What did you end up going for and where did you get them from? Thanks!

Hiya Joker,

No luck I'm afraid - same story as everywhere else... No stock in the country but they're on back order. They'll give me a call when they've got some in. :(

Fair enough. Hope you get them soon. I'll probably end up with vanilla TKCs due to the stock shortage.

Yeah, same here.

I've got a 150/70-17 TKC from my 1200 GSA so I guess it's handy to use that up anyway. Just need to get a front.

Oh right. :) I was just quoted £290.95 for ride-in-ride-out service at North Oxford Garage - I think I'll pass on that and fit them myself. LOL. Where do you get your TKCs from? :thumb2
