06 to 08 GSA - initial thoughts.

I took the crossbar off my 12GSA six months or so ago in order to mount twin switches for the spots and HIDs. The lack of the bar hasn't affected the Wunderlich handlebar bag which is a great bit of kit (unlike the TT version which went back rapido).

Paul: what's the lowest speed the Zumo reckon you're able to do in first with the clutch fully home?

Will have to check next time I get the bike out on Friday :D

GPS Socket

GPS socket on the 08 GSA is in a different place to the standard 08GS.

It is located on the fairing bar just behind the oil cooler. Easy to connect into once you have found it. :thumb

No cross brace for handlebar - should make fitting tank bags easier :D

Fitted my TT one day bag yeserday and lack of cross brace for handlebar does make it easier :thumb

TT Sump guard

Got round to fitting the TT sump guard off my 06 bike last night. Went straight on despite the front mountings having changed from rubber mountings on the 06 bike to a metal bracket on the 08 bike.

Paul: what's the lowest speed the Zumo reckon you're able to do in first with the clutch fully home?

Tim - doing some easy lanes in Wales today found that I could trundle along at 7mph (according to Zumo) with clutch fully home. Low first gear would appear to be an advantage. Was out with my mate Martin who also has a new 08 GSA but with standard gear box and mine would appear to have the advantage off road.

Hmm. My lowest speed with clutch fully home on an 06 GSA is also 7mph according to my Zumo, though it's a bit jerky at that speed.

What I was hoping you would say was that it was 5 or 6 mph. My ideal would be 3 or 4 mph, though I guess many would say that's too low.

Thanks for checking.

Tim - at 7MPH is was still pulling steadily (up a slight incline) rather than being jerky but no way it would go below say 5MPH without using the clutch. Also when doing this yesterday still only had just over 500 miles on the clock so was trying to keep it smooth.

I read somewhere that the low first gear is only 10% lower than before so wouldn't you expect 6.3 mph ?

Got round to fitting the front Wilbers (from my 06 GSA) today - straight fit but a little difficult as a result that you can no longer remove the cross brace section of the engine bars :blast

Then fitted oil cooler guard again straight fit :thumb

Fuel cap/filler has compeletely changed from the 06 GSA which means that the painted top tank pannel will probually no longer fit from the earlier GS's

Fuel pump looks pretty much the same and water still collects in the top - lets hope the seals have been sorted for 08 :augie

Final difference I noted today was that BM have finally stopped putting the piece of foam behind the front plastic engine cover (which always got satuated with water) so maybe the paint will stick to the the front aluminum engine casing a little longer now

changing the subject

What do you think of the new screen... any better than the previous model?

You can get a tinted screen as an option, but as standard they are identical to previous GSA's.

With regards to the gearing, I have gone for the "Enduro package" (Lower first gear and TKC's) Frankly, I cant tell any difference to the standard gearing of the previous model ....:nenau

Overall, having now done over 2500 miles, I can say that it is really, very similiar to the old GSA, with the exception of ESA , which is very, very good - :thumb2

Traction control will probably turn out to be as useful as the now defunct servo on the old brakes - I never needed traction and for the couple of times it has kicked in, I question whether it really needed to.

The '06 was a great bike and the '08 is a great bike, slightly more power and slightly better gearbox are both "nice to haves" rather than "must haves". I still love it and wouldn't swap it for any other bike on the planet!

Pretty much find myself agreeing with you..........08 has a few nice little touches. :bounce1

As an aside: I think that the fuel relay problems have been more of an electronic component failure than seal failure. The electronic relay is an epoxy sealed component and this is what fails.

Talking of servo brakes - dropped my 08 GSA in for it's first service today and service manager told me my old 06 GSA was in the workshop having a new ABS pump fitted
Hate to think what that would have cost if I still had the bike out of warranty. Brakes working well enough when I part ex it 2 weeks ago
