100GS Oil Filter Shim????

Rob

Sorry to compound the confusion re the shim, it's just that although the text states that Part No.4 is a seal, it's drawn as an oval so I (wrongly) presumed it to be a shim.

My 1989 R100GS Paris-Dakar has a steel shim plus paper gaskets (and 'bendy' oil filter).

My R100Gs has the shim which seems to compress the white O ring such that it had a square profile when taken out today. Looking closely at the engine surface side I can see that the much mentioned gasket is there. Knowing that it likely shouldn't be there I started to try and get it off but the buggering thing seems to be glued to the engine. I am wondering if the previous elderly german owner either glued the gasket on to stop it shifting about when fitting or if age has caused it to adhere to engine surface. The bike runs fine and the oil travels well through the oil cooler but that gasket still gives me a niggling doubt. I am tempted to get rid of the gasket by scraping it off and them removing the shim but also wonder if it's best to leave well alone since the bike seems OK with current set up. The oil light stays off, how long would it be before I'd notice a problem if that gasket is interfering with circulation?:eek

The oil light should go off immediately you start the engine. and should stay on 3/4 seconds after the engine stops turning.

The O ring can be completely uncompressed and yet you will still have sufficient oil pressure to put the light out.DAHIK

Anton Larbidger ? site has all the formation on shims you need but simply the 0 ring should have .6/.8 mm compression , so measure the setback of the canister and the thickness of the O ring and if you need a shim fit it, or a
gasket if you have too much compression.
