D'you know what I think you should do?

Try and meet up with someone who's got an 1100 near to you, dahn in the Southwest.

Park them next to each other, put a blind fold on, then ask the other person to start one of the bikes up, and see if you guess if it's yours or theirs.

That would be my advice.

The original question about the rattle when the bike is at idle and the noise stops is the clutch thrust bearing and/or the clutch pushrod.

The clutch pushrod, travels through the inside of the input shaft and when the bike is at idle, it rattles slightly inside the input shaft.

If the engine idle is slightly off, then the engine slows and speeds up in minute amounts. As it does this, the clutch pushrod, sitting inside the input shaft speeds up slightly and slows down slightly. When it does this it makes quite a bit of noise.

If you can get the idle adjusted very carefully, you will reduce this noise, but not eliminate it.

If you stand alongside any BMW flat twin, you will notice this noise to a lesser or greater extent than your own bike.

Basically there is nothing wrong with your bike, unless the noise is really excessive. If you bike is making a real excessive amount of noise, which ceases when you pull the clutch in, then seek help.

My own 1100, which I've owned since new, did this noise when it was first started up, outside the showroom.

I think you will find that your bike, apart from some little things, will be pretty much everything you are hoping for.

Bugger -sold the last black adventure tank yesterday, sorry i've only a TT 41Ltr tank in black.

I've just spent 1/2 hour trying to adjust my screen.

It looks like I've got the wrong screen fitted as it's got a cut out for a large round headlight, like the 1150 has.

There are some alloy straps holding the screen in place, you can just see them in this picture:

The screen is a long way forwards and directs the windblast straight onto my visor when it is open, slamming it shut for me, also the headlight illuminates the inside of the screen very brightly making it impossible to read the clocks and difficult to see ahead at night.

If I try to bring the screen backwards the bolts holding the screen to the straps foul the instrument console.

Any ideas ?

Yes, it did...... sell..though not on ebay.

It was being sold by a small unofficial BMW dealer near Ringwood who claims that he sells bikes that larger dealer have taken in px but are too ashamed of to put on their own forecourts.

I went for a quick spin down to the coast today and refilled, so I've used my first tank of fuel.

Used nearly exactly 4 gallons to cover just over 170 miles, so it's returning just over 40 mpg and as I have no idea when it was last serviced it's likely that a new air filter won't do any harm.

My suspicion is that it needs an input shaft bearing, though I will be checking the valve clearances (as soon as it's daylight and the engine is cold - hopefully this weekend) and balancing the carbs, I've no idea how much difference this will make.

Cosmetics are very poor:

I've also found a few damaged or incomplete bits and pieces, I could do with advice on how to remedy.

That is if the powers that be haven't decided that I am troll....

For the record, it was suggested to me by a 'sponser' of this site that I join.

As I have never visited this site before a lot of the references made make no sense to me, so I've not commented on them.

Apologies if there is anything I should have acknowledged.

If i were you id start by doing a full service on the beast. Engine oil, gerabox oil, rear diff oil , air filter, oil filter , plugs, valve clearances , end float clearence, alternator belt and ballance the carbs( most of those things will be covered somewhere on this forum). Then bleed the brakes and make sure you bleed thorough all new brake fluid to clean out any crap,
maybe a good idea to strip the brakes down and clean the callipers and re apply copper slip to the back of the pads and any metal/metal surfaces.
Take it for a good run , then live with it for a while before doing anything else.
These bikes do have their own little quirks and are different to most other bikes on the road, Live with it and get a feal of how things are before you do any serious work like stripping the clutch and gearbox,
hope thats of some use.

Despite the terrible noises I have been riding around on it, partly to get a feel for the beast (as you suggest) and partly to make sure that I actually like it.

I'd wouldn't consider riding a jap bike that made as much noise as this one does.

I've covered over 250 miles and it hasn't detonated or gotten significantly worse.

The noises have become less consistent however and the 'clutch/gearbox' rattle that initially disappeared every time the clutch lever was pulled in has now decided to be inconsistent.

I've just tackled the valve clearances and end float clearances which I was unable to adjust due to not having the correct size torx bit.

The end float on the left hand pot was 0.2 on both rockers.

On the right hand pot one had less than 0.05 and the other more than 0.2, so these have had to stay as they are for the moment.

Valve clearances were nearly correct on all the inlets and too great on the outlets.

I'm going to balance the carbs now and see if this has any affect on how noisy it is.

Spark plug access is difficult and I had a lot of trouble getting the socket out of the tunnel. I guess this is one of the things that is easy if someone hasn't nicked the toolkit prior to you getting the bike.

QUESTION: I've now got a high pitch whistling coming from the right hand side tank area - has anyone got any idea what this is ?

It's very annoying and distracting even with earplugs in.

I've just fitted some BMW handguards or bushguards as well.

I've also found a very large touring screen that looks like it might be a good fit and has been in the back of my shed for about 15 years.

It has a cut out the same size and shape as the rectangular headlight and wouldn't need much adjustment to get it to fit, but it has handguards built in and is huge.

Air filter, oil filter and oil change next......

QUESTION: What is the correct oil filter and is it possible to remove it without buying special tools ?
