Gentlemen
I have a 1996 1100 that I was out on recently... It's a low mileage bike (16K) that runs very well indeed. I've had a couple of 1150s in the past also so am very familiar with the gentle whine from the fuel pump. On a recent ride however the fuel pump on the 1100 is now a scream. This noise is not the usual whine. The bike still runs fine.

Does anyone have a view on wether this noise heralds the impending failure of the fuel pump? Or could it be that just a somewhat blocked fuel filter could induce it? I'm certain the bike will never have had the fuel filter changed so will do that and the little U pipe and I don't mind changing the pump if required but they are of course pricey for the OE one...

Thoughts?

First thing is reroute the fuel lines , on my 1150 they were running against the tank and making the same noise

Rich,
The other thing to bare in mind is the rubber U tube thatgoes from the pump to the outlet. These do tend to fail after a period of time

It certainly is ! ... How long ago and is it still working ok?
Around a year ago and running lovely !! It looked reasonable quality and straight forward to fit. Only faff was removing the original "O" Hose clamps, I used small jubilee clips on refit, with care, so that the flange resits OK. I think that you need a special pair of pliers to refit new "O Clips"

I haven't got any experience of them, but there are cheap (£20) replacements on Aliexpress.

How low is the fuel in the tank? The pumps can sound noisy when the fuel level is low, due to not being fully submerged in petrol

Neil, tank is half full... Went out to the bike just now to see wether a miracle had occurred and the screeching had stopped. It hasn't.. However, turning the bike on and off a few times to prime the system and listen to the pump created a slight whiff of petrol that I've not noticed before.. Related or coincidental I wonder?

Could simply be the fuel filter needs changing. It making a noise due to having to work harder. If it were mine I’d change the filter and renew the U shaped piece of internal fuel hose and see if that cures the noise,

Neil.. Righto... was kind of thinking that way myself given the cost of the OE pump.. But good to hear from those with far more experience than me...

Thanks..

If the fuel lines have quick release connectors check they are seated properly.

Well me too had a screaming fuel pump, replaced with a new one same make and all is good…
Screaming was due to faulty pump and that can go anytime and then you stuck..
Better replace it at home , taking the tank off is simple enough, done nee fuel filter at same time and checked the U- bend..

An update on this now I've been into the guts of the tank... All looked good, fuel filter not done many miles going by the date code on it, U bend seemed ok... Ending up changing everything for new on the assumption that the pump must therefore have been the culprit.. All done, 100 mile test tide at the weekend, all seems well again... Big hole in wallet!!
