Hi
Just replaced cam chain tensioner still hasn't resolved engine noise. Checked to see if noise was from throttle bodies, but seem ok too. Definite engine knock only appears when warm.(louder on tick over) Bike runs ok, run out of ideas now any suggestions please?, can't really pinpoint where its coming from, thought it was left side hence the cam tensioner change, not sure now. Nervous about using the bike now till I have sorted this, even though it runs ok. If I could drop it into somewhere recommended (located just south of Wrexham) I would? Any help would be appreciated. I'm off out side to tinker a bit more

Cheers Mick
(if you have been to wits end, I am sitting on the bench there scratching my bald head at the moment)

As the bikes new to you you may not know that both the R1100 & R1150 have a knock as standard when hot, its quite deep and is noticeable at idle and falling RPM's (Blip from idle and knocks on rundown) as you have done the tensioner and assuming the valve clearances and endloats are OK it could be just a normal noise, the only other thing may be a broken cam chain guide, try to listen to other R1100/1150's and see if they have the same noise.

I had similar symptoms on a previous 1150GSA and it was the cam followers. They are worse when warm. I had Scriminger's sort it out. Amazing how such little wear can make so much noise.

You could check Rocker End Play.
Adjust it near to minimun, 0.05 mm. Max is 0.4 mm.

I was worried when I first got my 1150GS by the engine noise, so much so that I grabbed another lad who got off an 1150GS at a bike show and asked him to give his opinion - he reckoned it sounded grand and was on the quiet side if anything ;) These engines do take a bit of getting used to but 18 months and several thousand kilometers later I'm sort of used to it. I did the cam tensioner upgrade and checked and adjusted the valve clearances but at the end of the day they just are a bit noisy...
