HI,

I would be greatfull for any advise on my recently acquired 1150gsa,
first love the bike she had 83k miles and now showing 86k running well, I aim to keep her awhile and eventually do a Restoration, to start all over again, my questions are:

1 When I bought bike, ABS switched off, the original blue rim front wheel was given to me with bike but it has loose spoke's, I will have that re set comes with abs ring. Bike is fitted with a gs front wheel no abs ring. looking under tank all seems to be there and when ignition is switched on there is a continuous click until I press the ABS button on right hand bar that seems to stop click until next time ign is turned on from stop. No abs light light up on clocks, how could the abs be dis connected.

2 I would like to obtain a spare gear box, mine shows 6 gears in gear indicator, would any gear box from 1150 series engines fit or was GS GSA different.

Sorry for long drawn out questions, but help and or advise will be much appreciated.

Regards
Paul

What year is the bike mate? does it have two spark plugs per cylinder? some adventures were fitted with a lower first gear as an option. Under the tank is there a largish multiplug thats not connected/cut off rewired in some way that does'nt appear to be factory?

I think you will find that the top gear is also slightly lower than the GS on the optional GSA gearbox ( That most GSA had fitted). I believe all 1150 had 6 speed so should fit OK, 1100 had 5.

My GSA 6th on enduro box, is definatley lower than my old GS
Go for standard box as I can't see any benefit other that using more fuel and less relaxing motorway cruising :blast

Don't concern yourself with the ABS. It will go wrong at some point, so just take the whole lot off and ride with peace of mind. Search for info on removing abs on this forum.
The standard adventure box came with a lower 6th gear, which i find more useable day to day, especially two up where the high 6th (on my old 1150) was only good at high speed on the motorway. It also came with an optional lower 1st gear, better for controlled descents off road and two up slow speed manoeuvring. I believe the standard 1150 box will fit but there is a specially notched spline on the driveshaft of the Adv, Steptoe's the man to ask here. I have a spare box with the lower 1st gear for my Adv, having seen the casing crack on my old bike i believe it's a useful spare; if you can get one at the right price, again for peace of mind and, if you never use it, you can sell it on if you quit riding GS's.

Need to know if you have servo/abs brakes or standard abs. Therre's a world of difference between the two.

The standard GS box has a higher top gear. Which equates to 500 rpm difference bewteen the two bikes in top gear.
Filling a 31 litre tank with the low ADV gearing compared to the higher geared GS standard when the reserve light comes on means another £6 each fill up.

I know this as a fact because i've ridden my standard GS fitted with an ADV tank back from morocco for 1500 miles alongside (rob) shapeshifter, on his low geared adv.
He cried at every fill up after working out how much extra he'd spent on fuel over the 55k miles his bike had covered :D

Wow what can I say, thanks for all your reply,s. My bike was first registered July 02, I will as advised look for a spare gear box and I have just bought a low mileage 1150 engine 14k so on the way to keeping her rolling for a while yet :JB

She is a single spark model.

As for ABS, sorry for ignorance but how do I tell between servo or standard abs?
I shall look at connector plug as mentioned at weekend when I will remove tank, I only remember looking at alloy block with brake lines behind battery, any photos on forum.

Many Many Thanks to All

Watch out for an irregular snatchiness to the running appearing on the 02 era single spark bikes. It represents itself as if the bike's spark is cutting out, or a loss in fuelling, which clears itself when you crack open the throttle. If you get these symptoms, it'll most likely be the ECU. Had this happen on my old Adventure at a similar mileage.:thumb2

I asked about the multi plug as i was trying to ascertain if you had a servo bike that had the servo removed, when you pull in the brake lever do you get an electrical whine with the bike switched on?

Don't all single spark 1150GS/A models have non servo brakes? Thought that was the case.

HI illustratedman,

No whine when brake lever pressed, single spark motor. Brakes work well both front and back, just I was told previous owner had disconnected ABS because he bought a (spoke) front wheel without abs ring mounting as original needed re tuning loose spokes. I have wheel boxed to go just need to identify how I would re establish abs system

Ok you've got abs11 by the sounds of it the clicking noise is the abs system indicating there is a fault this will go on until you acknowledge it by pressing the abs button, i dont reckon it's been disconnected i reckon the previous owner pulled the bulbs out after fitting the non abs wheel. I'd pop the new wheel in and do an abs reset, the procedure is on here if you do a search involves the diagnostic plug if i recall. See if that cures it and check to see if there are bulbs in the dash. When the abs faults the lights come up again after a while as a reminder that it aint working i believe, would'nt hear the clicking on the move i would've thought. If it has been disconnected properly i dont think you would get the clicking noise which is probably the abs doing it's start up test. Worth a try.:thumb2

Many many thanks, the original wheel is all packed and waiting to go to a wheel builder/fixer type man! will have to dig out classic mags to see who to send to. I will do exactly as you recommend and will post finding when wheel sorted.
Cheers

PS: Any one recommend where spoke wheel can be sent to for truing up.

Back again

Hi To All,

I originaly posted this thread regarding recommissioning my ABS, the owner I had bought it from said it had been switched off because the original wheel need tightening, some spoke loose and had a spare none abs wheel fitted.

Well I now have wheel back from Hagon and good job done and fair price I think!
As a well versed member said earlier in this thread, the possability is the original owner has just removed bulbs from consul, Correct as I have found after fitting new wheel with abs ring. I also carried out the re set procedure using pin 2 & 4 on diagnostic plug under seat.
When I switch ignition on both lights now flash when I press abs button one light goes out one remians on, I have not ridden her as I have only just finished and wanted to hear what more experianced members might say.

Do I need to ride her for abs to reset, also noted that when I apply the brake I have a swiching sound but brakes appear to work fine before and after changing wheel. I would like to keep system if I can but will have it removed as a last resort. Is there anything that a sound home mechanic can do, like flush system or clean any filters that may be fitted, waiting for my CD workshop manual to arrive.

Many Thanks
Paul

Ride bike for ABS to set i think about 5mph or more for it to set should hear a click when you move off.

By pressing the abs button you are switching it off.
Turn bike on both lamps should flash together start engine they still flash.
Ride over 3 or 5 mph. Rolling down my drive does it. The ABS will do a self test noted by a clunking noise. At this point both lights should go out. If that's the case it's working. Every so often when you stop or go really slow the abs will reset and you will hear the clonk. This is normal. If after the self test you have abs lights flashing alternately then you have another issue.

If it is working ok I would flush the fluid just bleeding at the calliper end leaving the abs bleed nipples alone. When I did mine. I pushed the calliper pistons back in and secured them that way, using a slightly open nipple to release pressure and some air came out. I read somewhere this is better because GS calliper can trap air behind the piston and bleeding without pushing back won't get all the air out.

Jiff.

Jiff & spa,

Many thanks, I now understand system, did as you sergested and taken her for a run befor getting out of court yard she made a clunk of sorts and lights out, I assume this happens for every journey as a proving system, am a happy bunny.
