1150 Love

You may have covered this, but have you been buying OEM fork seals or aftermarket?

If the latter, try the OEM, there's a chance it could fix your issue with the seals

My 2000 model is still on the original fork seals but one started weeping last year. I have a little trail bike and that’s also suffered in the past so I got a seal doctor tool (£15 on eBay) which worked brilliantly. It won’t fit the GS stanchion though, so I got a seal buddy tool (£3 on eBay) and that has also worked perfectly.

Yes, heard of the Seal Buddy and if you're off road I guess i can see why it would be really useful. I'm impressed it - or similar - worked on the original 1150 seals! They're quite well protected being so high up and inside the body work.

It's making me wonder if my fork seals ever actually needed replacing? This is on a1200 (2011). The good thing in my case was the steering bearing + fork seals replacement sorted out a handlebar misalignment (poor re-assembly by someone before me). All perfectly true now. Next time I might try your method first!

Love mine but, now it is having fuel running problems which so far a lot of money hasn't fixed.
Making me depressed. Very hard to star, running rich, a regular backfire but, when it runs; runs great.
Sept 2002 model.

Try using super unleaded ..that E5 is crap if you're gonna run it in yer tank put some fuel stabilizer in it as well to stop the E5 from going off so quick...but I generally avoid the stuff.. pointless ..use more fuel to do the same miles ...

Agreed, I've not done the full maths, but my gut feeling right now is that less than 5% ethanol E98 is actually so much better burning than the up to 10% ethanol E95 that it's financially better to use the expensive stuff!
I got over 200 miles from my Rockster on one ride last year, before the reserve light came on. I was actually starting to worry that the reserve measure had broken!

Tried seal buddy first. Fitted 2 other sets from Motorworks before replacing the stanchions. Then 3rd Motorworks set fitted by Steptoe. We’ll change again at next service. Got to get it through mot on Thursday though

Easiest solution is to fit gaiters and simply forget about it.

The oil is mostly there for lubricant and all you need to do is keep it off the brakes and tyres.

;)

Lifted the dust caps, wiped oil away and reseated caps. Took for an MOT and a front tyre change. Failed on horn not working. Thankfully and by pure chance the mechanic I bought the bike from was there, while I was having a coffee in Maccy D's. He jiggled the wire and it passed its MOT. Strange coincidence but a nice biker story anyway! So another year on the road with my new MOT. As for the tyre, got 7500 miles from front tyre which is good. Surprised how tyres such a difference as it has been heavy to turn into corners, esp at slow speed and started following all and every deviation in line on the road. New tyre made the whole bike feel light and sprightly again.

7,500 from a front tyre:eek:

I usually get about 16,000 & 12,000 from the rear.

Wow… :thumb2 Does the bike stand up unsupported on those

I’ve killed a TKC rear in less than 1500 before now, but it’s not easy to work out since I swapped to alloys and started using part-worns.

That’s a bit puzzling then. I had a similar issue last year……..changed the seal but still had a slight weep. Decided to get a re-chromed stanchion and that solved the problem. As I see it there isn’t much else in there it could be

Bought my 1150GS in December very cheap and unseen. It’s bike number 187 and tbh was an impulse buy. Turns out I love it, already done some gentle off roading, tried a friends 1250 and enjoyed wheelying it but not the poor fuelling and the non GS feel. Was happy to get my 1150 back.

Since buying I’ve removed a load of extras I don’t like, engine bars, toe guards, wind deflectors and other bits of tat. If someone wants them cheap 🤣

And I’ve fitted, Gemi chip, YSS shocks front and rear, new tyres and a service. Got a pair of 17’s and new discs to fit next. Looking forward to it 👍
