1200GSA ACCIDENT!!!!!

great to hear your ok,and hope you get the bike sorted or you get the money that your entitled to. One consolation is i bet you did a lot more damage value wise to Aston.Let's hope he's only TPF&T :D Somehow doubt it though, but it would be a nice thought. Good luck.:thumb2

Hi
I was involved in an accident on my GSA1200 08 PLATE the other day, some nice chap pulled out on me in his gleaming Aston Martin. It was a fifty mph impact, i was catapulted down the road and managed to walk away apart from a few bruises and damage to me crown jewels.
Question! how strong are these bikes? having been to have a look at my bike , it has taken force through forks, which are bent back and i,m wondering if they will write it off,not sure if frame will have taken a good tweak, other damage is lefthand crash bar has ripped into rocker cover and left all my oil all over road, seat also decided to take a flight into hedge, together with my sat nav which i could not find!
I think overall bike performed well, and i think the riding position gets you out of trouble.
Cheers
Martin

Martin, First off...Glad to hear you're ok!
I too had a pretty big one (A pile up with 6 cars and one bike!) and was sure they'd write the bike off, but to my massive surprise, with £3k of damage...they repaired it! New forks, crash bars, handlebars and lots of small bits and bobs and it's back and like new! I think it's because there's no frame to get bent, it's small front and rear sub-frames connected to the engine, which are cheap and easy to replace! Having said all that, luckily my engine only needed one cam cover (gotta love the protective head covers!)

Anyway, hopefully you may be as lucky as I was and get the bike repaired!

Lee

glad you're OK - sounds pretty scarey stuff

You've probably thought of / dealt with this, but take all the (undamaged) bling off the bike if you can before it gets spirited out of reach with the bike. Many policies won't cover upgrades/extras/bling, meaning they won't pay out for them or would replace only with OE items. It all adds up.:eek

You may be able to use those bits for your replacement bike, or at least sell them to offset the cost of newer bits for your ( later model ?) replacement. :thumb2

1200 gsa is a write off

Insurers have written me bike off, waiting for the call offering me some crap offer!
So what should i accept?
08 PLATE GSA 1200 NON ABS
16000 MLS
EPS
WIRED FOR INTERCOM AND ZUMO 660
REMUS END CAN.
Im thinkin around 9k.
Or should i try for more??
Any thoughts?

Have a look at the BM AUB's for an idea on how much a replacement will cost you, as that's a good starting point. The fact that they're at the higher end of the cost to buy is not your problem ;)

Get on the BMW Motorrad website and search the used bikes section in dealers for the same/similar spec and age bike as yours. I'd then work out an 'average' price from the bikes that fit your criteria.

Wait for their offer and if it seems low tell them you want a payout equivalent to the most expensive priced bike you've got in the above list and then get ready for some serious haggling!

I had no problem at all with my claim and actually funded a brand new 2009 same spec bike out of it but dropped lucky as dealers were offering big discounts then to clear their stocks ready for the 2010 updated model

insurance offer

They have offerered me £9650 for me bike.I can have salvage of bike @ £965
. Might try and twist em for some more, think i will have bike back and fix her!
Cat c which means i have to get it checked out somewhwere, any one done this, think it will need forks and wheel cam cover, maybe back on road for a couple of grand!!!!! Thinkin,

At £965 I would be very keen to buy the bike back and do my own repairs then get it inspected professionally and a repair certificate issued or whatever the process is. I would expect to be replacing fork tubes and handlebars plus whatever has cosmetic damage, plus a damned good inspection of the subframes, wheels, yokes, suspension components and engine mounting lugs.

FWIW my recently purchased BMW main dealer 'approved used' 58 plate GSA with dynamic and premium packs and enduro 1st gear (the full monty inc panniers) retailed at £9750 with 9500 miles on the odometer, that gives you some idea of the pricing.

Fek me - buy the bike for £965 then break it and sell the bits on ebay. Surely you'll get more than £965 for the engine alone, and another few hundred quid for the gearbox. Didnt you say it had a Remus can too? Reuse that on your next bike or sell it for £150+. The other parts will fly on ebay and you are without doubt onto a winner there. If you don't do it, a greasy trader will.

break it:thumb
as the man above says
I nearly bought my 1200 Triumph Trophy back after it was written off
BUT
insurance companies would only insure it third party afterwards ( carole Nash)
:blast
so I took the money and limped into my next bike ( literally):thumb
Mine was a T bone RTC like yours hit a taxi driver that pulled out of a side road without looking... I wrote the taxi off as well ! He got done for careless
I hope 007 gets done too?

We both know what its like to own two swollen grapefruits and a chippolata....god its painful !

+1.... break and ebay.... You ll make double that easily... a bit of effort in shipping etc and it will take a month to get through it, but its worth it....

The important thing is that you are ok and can & want to ride aGAIN...

I can't speak for Carole Nash, but I have never been asked by any insurer if any of my bikes (or cars) have been written off / repaired... And as far as I can make out its not a material fact that you should declare voluntarily if the bike has been repaired to a roadworthy condition.

Glad to hear your ok. If your going to hit anything, do it in style.

Seriously, have you been checked over by your GP or hospital. Get all your bumps and bruises recorded, it helps with the insurance claim. Also, any loss of earnings due to time off etc.

Hope you get sorted soon and back on the road.

That is possibly ....

... because you've never asked for a quote on a 'Category' bike/car; were you to do so you can bet the MIB database would flag it as damaged and adjust their prices/cover accordingly :(

I'd take the bike and be breaking it for spares if I were you. I would think there is a couple of grand profit in there somewhere which will help for some new bling on it's replacement:D

1st dibs on the rear subframe and fd if you do:D

Once a vehicle or bike is written off, the insurance companies enter the details on a database for all the other companies to see. You could get it repaired and then insure it for to the value of a bike that was never in an accident and the companies will quote a premium based on that value and take your money (and they won't even tell you its flagged up as a write off). Thing is, if it was stolen, they would only pay out on the value of a written off bike thats been repaired i.e. low. Reason I know this is a mate went through the same thing - paid highish premiums and got a low payout when the car was nicked!

Personally I think its wrong that you give a valuation which they charge the appropriate premium for and then you have to haggle to get the payout. If I insure something for £10k and pay the appropriate premium to cover this, then £10k is what I should get back! :rob

I would have thought that when you give the reg number the computer checks will show up that it's been a CAT??? write off

What about personal injury compensation?

I highly recommend White Dalton if you find you need solicitors. They were brilliant when I has a post-crash dispute some years ago.
