There was a recent thread on this which is what inspired me to talk about my issue so I thought I should start a fresh one as it was a different rattle and it made itself pretty obvious in a fairly short time.
So, one sunny morning back at the beginning of August I decided that mowing the lawn and pulling some weeds up could piss right off, I was having a day out on my bike!
A couple of hours into my day out after a brief stop at some traffic lights I noticed a new noise as I accelerated away. A subtle rattle from about 2500 revs onwards in each gear as you accelerated, and I’m not talking hard acceleration here, just normal. A rattle is one way to describe it, but as I tried to analyse it in my head it also reminded me of perhaps a rattly cam chain, or even a flutter type sound. Like I said it was quite subtle at this stage but it got my attention and I was certain it was new. With the bike static and in neutral you could rev it as hard as you like, no unusual noises at all, it would only happen with the engine under acceleration. On a steady throttle it sounded perfectly normal.
I was dreading going into the dealer with such a vague description as I knew I would get the standard response, “they all make noises”. So I thought I’d wait and see how it goes.
Anyway I had a cracking day out and by the end of it the noise was still there. The following few days of commuting to work changed nothing, it was still there and perhaps a little more noticeable. Come the end of the week I had a trip planned down to my father-in-law for his birthday lunch, wife and everyone else were already there so I left at the crack of dawn for a two and a half hour motorway blast. I leave the house and to me the noise was a little more noticeable again, although this could have easily been my mind playing tricks. Once you know something is there you always notice it more.
An hour or so into my journey in top gear on cruise control I start hearing an occasional strange sound, very brief but must have been high pitched and loud to hear it above all the wind noise and with ear plugs in. This started to become more frequent and at one point I notice a slight loss of drive at the same time. I’m starting to get a bit freaked out now. So I backed off for a bit and everything seemed fine, no warnings on the display and no strange noises so I get back up to speed and carry on. A couple of miles on and it starts making an awful whining noise and quite obviously slowing, like I was dragging the brake so I head for the hard shoulder, swearing.
Luckily it was still really early and there was very little traffic about but my bike was fucked. There was oil all over my back tyre, my right boot and it was burning off the exhaust.
I wont go into the details because it will take too long but BMWs recovery service was a complete let down. They got me and the bike to the nearest dealership but after that the service was terrible and the dealership didn’t give a f**k about me, they just kept saying ‘you need to speak to BMW Assist, it’s nothing to do with us’
I completely missed the birthday lunch and so did my wife because she had to come and pick me up in the end.
So apparently whatever it was that let go in my gearbox it cracked the casing and I need a new engine.
Next time you get told ‘they all do that sir’ don’t stand for it!
