1250GS Hill Start Control problem

Same problem

I’m having exactly the same problem my r1250 GS has been back numerous times had new clutch micro switch fitted today still the same mine releases just stood there with clutch in and in gear sometimes it disengages straight away other times it might take 30 sec no real pattern to it the S1000xr they lent me as a loan bike works every time getting very frustrated now

My October 21 1250GS has had a problem with the Hill Start Control since purchase and has been into the Dealer again today trying to sort it out. They replaced the Microswitch under the Clutch Lever but this had no effect.

Problem is that the HSC light goes out as I release the clutch but before the clutch starts to take up the drive, so if stopped on a Hill the bike wants to roll backwards. This is most noticeable when pulling away in slow traffic.

Have any of you also had this problem and if so, has your Dealer been able to fix it?

Thanks.[/QUOTE]

My CB500X has this - it’s called a rear brake!

Even worse, my 2021 1250GS has hill start control and after 1,5 years of ownership I'm yet to remember to use it. I still start on the hill using my brakes. Too much biking in last 35 years without hill start control, I guess...

I had HH on my 2018 1200 and it was quite harsh, where as the HH is much better on the 1250 and doesn't need as many revs to release it. From what I've experienced on hills that arn't too steep I don't even notice a difference in the amount of throttle needed compared to if it wasn't activated

Yup, I had it on my 1200GSA and it was useless. The 1250GSA ‘update’ was better, but I still never used it. Back brake is the way to go every time.

My 1976 MZ doesn't have a hill start switch thingy either, but I seem to manage OK; but it also has a rear brake :thumb

Haha, I have hill start assist, but use it as a handbrake (which it works brilliantly at). However, to pull away, I disengage the hill start and use the brakes as I have always used them. This way I get a perfectly clean and smooth drive away from the line. Personally I have found the opposite issue to the OP with relying hill start assist alone, in that the brake hangs for longer than necessary, causing the bike to lurch.

I do like the auto hold of hill start, but you can’t beat good old fashioned manual ‘feel’ for pulling away from a stop :thumb

Good on you. The skill of balancing, clutch, brake and throttle must be declining.

In relation to HSC. This works seamlessly on my 2021 R1250GSA, and very useful it is to

It’s common place now on cars and vans, we have a 2014 Fiat Ducato, 2017 and 2016 Citroen cars, certainly not top of the range and they all have hill hold.
I like it on my 21 year R1250GS, just wish I’d had it years ago on my 2006 GS that had the annoying servo brakes.

Tried it today for the first time. I was sitting on traffic light on the steep hill. On green light I started to release the clutch but the bike was still holding the brake. Then it suddenly launched itself forward and almost stalled. I had to pull the clutch back in to avoid stalling, accelerate and release the clutch again. It was all very quick, took maybe 2 seconds. I didn't like the experience and will not try it again. I believe it needs some practice but I'll forget about it because I'm ok without using it.

I go back to my earlier post. If you grab a handful of brake (or a foot full) prior to setting off, the hill start disengages and you pull away smoothly with old school clutch control. The advantage of this is being able to not sit on the brakes whilst waiting at the lights for 5 minutes.

Basically, use it as a handbrake :okay

It engaged on my 2022 model GSA on the ferry the other day on a flat deck and then refused to release , turned off the ignition left it for a minute and then restarted and it was fine . Then again on the same trip the wonder wheel went mental at one stage making the sat nav do its own thing and a couple of times the cruise control went on holiday for a few miles

Joys of owning a BMW

Putting in to neutral forces a cancellation of the hill start normally.

The hill hold thingy is beautifully smooth on my 1250 - my previous 1200 needed a few more revs before it released.

just a thought if you have bike on ferry can u use the hill hold would be a bit more safer for bike movement or does the hill hold cancel itself once ignition is switched off?

The system is based on the ABS servo pressurizing the rear wheel brake. Once the engine is stopped the HSC release the brake...

Are you certain Phil?

I just picked up my 2019 1250GSA Rallye this morning and stopped on a steep local hill in 1st gear in traffic. I saw the green H icon appear on the TFT, put the bike into neutral and then sat and waited on the hill until the traffic lights changed and traffic moved off. It auto-disengaged the hill hold as I pulled away again in 1st gear.

Mine also works in neutral, my first experience of using it was on a hill at the lights, sat with both hands off the bars, thinking this is great, a very different experience to when I had a 2006 model with servo whirring away.
