t may not seem like it but when i end up with a post on here in my mind I always try and focus on the positives, and mention in a sort of passing manner, whats bugging me. This time I'm determined thats what I'm going to do so here goes.
2010 GS1200, love it to bits, its comfortable, its fast, within the reasonable constraints of running it in, It sounds really quite good, looks fantastic, and so far I dont have a bad word to say about it.......... BUT ( you're gonna love this!!!) If i told you it had used 2 LITRES OF OIL IN 200 MILES, I suspect you might think i had got something wrong somewhere. I hate assumptions but i am told that the bike takes 4 litres. this fills the sight glass when full, and did when i picked the bike up. 200 miles later (223 to be precise) Did the usual oil check and the sight glass is now half full, equating to about 2 litres of oil left, and yes i did check it when warm and did everything i was told to do... Phoned BMW assist who sent out a very nice chap in a van. Thought he would run the bike check the oil and have a look for the vibes through the handlebars that i am sure it didnt do when it was new.(ONLY at certain revs) WRONG!!!!!. I was told that he's not gonna attempt to fix it as he's not "BMW Trained" and if he puts oil in it and it goes bang later on then BMW will try and wriggle out of getting it sorted under warranty as it was meddled with by a non BMW trained person.

He also told me, in his exact words"Between me and you this isnt the first 4 valve engine that I've been called out to. BMW are trying to hush it up and not create a fuss."

Anyway Bahnstormers have it now. I'm waiting to get it back, and I will be really quite happy to get back on it, as I'm finding I tend to enjoy riding it, even if it is dark and cold and quite shitty weather. Just cant stay off it to be honest, so there you go started on a positive told the facts as I see them and ended on a positive,as thats the way I feel about this bike, and wouldnt swap it for anything else. Bahnstormers have been really quite good, taking the bike at (VERY) short notice and also agreeing to deliver it back to me. I just feel like they are doing everything they can for me unlike a certain other dealership would probably have done!!.....

there you go, job done item posted and i await your comments with REGARDS oil consumption et al....

Ride safe people (and check your oil)

I suspect you might think i had got something wrong somewhere.

I hate assumptions but

i am told that the bike takes 4 litres.

this fills the sight glass when full, and did when i picked the bike up.

200 miles later (223 to be precise)

Did the usual oil check and the sight glass is now half full,

equating to about 2 litres of oil left,

and yes i did check it when warm and did everything i was told to do...

Even though you hate assumptions, you assume too much.

The sight glass's bottom line to top line represents 0.50 litres as per hand book.

Half a sight glass is therefore 0.25 litres.

Check oil level in method described in handbook.... which also details types of oil and the maximum quantity of oil to be used (4 litres, with oil filter change) and correct topping up procedure to use.

The same owners hand book is refreshingly light on assumptions, though BuMW do make some about the owners of their vehicles.

=====

Engine oil
Engine oil, capacity max 4.0 l, with filter change

Engine oil, quantity for topping up
max 0.5 l (Difference
between MIN and MAX)

Nice conspiracy theory thrown in, too.

No idea about your vibe.

This is a wind up right? 10mltrs per mile, it couldnt leak out that quick if you left the drain plug out, the site window only relates to the upper 500ml of the sump but you knew that didnt you?

Wot he said ...

... because checking the oil on these bikes is notoriously difficult, even if you're well used to bikes  You need to do it exactly the same way each time, and preferably in the same place (i.e. outside your garage) to ensure you're comparing like with like; otherwise you'll just get false readings :comfort

Now if you'd managed to fit in 2 litres after a run, I'd be worried (on your behalf), but you haven't, so I won't :thumb

The difference between the top and bottom of the sight glass is 0.5 litres. Halfway on the sightglass does not represent half of the oil capacity. I doubt very much that you have used 2 litres of oil, more like the half-litre that the sightglass indicates.

This oil consumption rate whilst running-in is not unusual.

edit: aaargh! Fingers too slow!

its ****ed i'll give you 50 sovs for it:D:D:D:D[/QUOTE really!!!! so 0.25 litres For 200 miles isnt a bad deal at all then huh. I wish I understood!!! ,lol logic dictates that if full sight glass is 4 litres then half full will be 2 Litres based on the fact that it should be a linear scale,so says the man who now wont answer his phone. and is also himself a BMW owner!!!! although in his defence he is somewhat getting on a bit when I can get a word in sideways between blasts of "During the war!!!":rob:ronno

.fkkity fk fk fk and damn tooo!!!!!!!!!:nenau

As has previously said, checking the oil level can be difficult. I would say at times frustrating. My 05 plate has 50k+ miles on it and the oil level varies all the time. Do a local run, check oil level after 10-20mins on centre stand and the level can in the middle. Next day do a long run it can be at the top. Conversly the oil level can be in the middle after a long run and at the top after a short run. The bike seems to make its own mind up so I don't top it up between services. Have never had the oil show less than a quarter of the sight glass. As long as it is in the sight glass, know that one day it will show half full and the next maybe full showing a little gap at the top or maybe even overfull. Go figure, I can't and I don't worry.

Steve

The GS engine has two oil circuits, one for lubrication and the other for cooling the oil via the beak-mounted oil cooler.

When checking the oil when hot, I always briefly touch the (very hot) grey oil return pipe from the oil cooler to the sump (or the underside of the oil cooler) to see if hot is is flowing eg the oil thermostat has opened: No point in checking the oil level if the oil can't get back to the sump from the oil cooler and therefore reads falsely low in the sightglass.

For the past 11 years I've check my oil level cold and it's never caused an issue:confused:

If it really had used 2l in 200 miles there'd either be a big pool under the bike or a blue cloud behind you....unless it's leaked into your clutch:green gri

Bloody ell mate lighten up ffs. I listened to someone more senior than me who I thought would know better. he didnt, I've learnt my lesson, and for that reason thats almost all except........sadly in this world no one is perfect, and i have no problem admitting i boobed but the Bumw do make some assumptions about their owners is a tad shitty snipey underhand bearing in mind the circumstances......:comfort

genuine comment made by collection agent, and as he collects f*cked bikes for a living then of course his opinions are not valid and what he is telling me is bollocks, err yes right ho, lets move on shall we!!!
No idea about your vibe.[/QUOTE]me neither but definitely not there from new!!

most manufacturers seem to think 500ml is acceptable per 1000miles:eek

i must be lucky with my 03 GSA she dont seem to use any between services:)

LOL he probably feels so bad for giving you shit information that he's gone and shot himself using his WW2 Luger what he stole from a dead German :D

Are you going to call Bahstormers on Monday and tell them you've been a bit of a twat? :augie

I am merely going to inform them of my former BMW owning friends interpretation, and assure them that he has been severely excommunicated, taken off my Xmas card list forever, and I've also let his tyres down!!!!!.

No doubt in my mind that when he goes to pump them up he will once again fck his figures up and put 4 times as much air in as he should, and dont worry if he does as i will hear his tyres pop from my house!!!!!

REALLY REALLY curious about the vibes that werent there when i first picked it up though!!!!!:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah

I think its entirley reasonable to blame someone else for this, and i doubt that they will piss themselves laughing. :thumb2

You haven't quite got the hang of this yet.

Jumping into the pool of UKGSer is rather like 'Ask the audience', you can never be quite sure who is going to be pushing the buttons. You didn't value the opinions of the mechanic, as he was apparently not BuMW trained. Yet hang on his every other word, as you did with the guru on the telephone, "I'lll phone a friend please, Chris".

Still, never mind, it's all come good in the end. :beerjug:

I would start a separate thread on your vibes, as your question is getting lost in the (not unreasonable) pee taking.

While the bike is with Barnstormers give them a call and ask them to check the ignition coils. They can sometimes break down and cause vibration, which is actually a parcial misfire. I've had these go on a couple of occasions.

I always take mine home to do it, right outside the garage. It's a pain from the Alps or Picos, but worth it for the peace of mind. :thumb2

Nice use of the over-fill possibility, leading to possible additional concerns eating away....:D Very naughty, Paul.
