Hi,

I am finding my GS Seat a bit uncomfortable on longer rides. I would like to look at either retrimming the existing seat, or buying a new seat. I am tall (6'6") so a high seat option is good, but wonder about something with firmer foam/gel padding.

There are lots of options available in the UK. Any suggestions from UK owners for available seats to buy, or good retrimming options.

Thanks

Phil

My 09 GSA seat was torture. I belive they have more foam than the normal GS but after 300 miles I walked a bit like John Wayne. Could only finish the trip by borrowing an airhawk!

I bought a secondhand seat and took it to a local chap in Huddersfield and had it cut down so I could flat foot the bike almost and had a gel pad put in. Never had a problem since.

I did try Sargent seat and found it was good but I couldn't afford one and none were around secondhand at the time. Think I paid around 140 for my modified seat.

my 57 plate GS would do 30 mins then give cramps / muscle fatigue - swapped to a GSA seat off ebay and it will do 90 mins before the same issues arise - run an airhawk woopee cushion u can do 13hrs

oddly my 2011 GSA has what looks identical to the other GSA seat, but its a very different shape to its seat - no idea if it works never enjoyed riding it, so hardly done more than 25 mins at a time

a sargent seat is not for people that like to move about to more safely ride the bike quickly - only rode one with that seat once took the bike back within 3 miles

Send it to Tony Archer he will work his magic on it.

Tony Archer was the one who did mine. He was talking about retiring few years back. Used to be within walking distance of my house which was useful!

Despite what botus says above, my Sargent seat has been a godsend.
I fitted it at about 35-40.000 miles already covered as I found the stock seat a bit uncomfortable after a couple of hours. I have ridden around 110,000 miles plus with it fitted. It has better foam. A much wider profile so it spreads your weight better under you buttocks.
The rear part that flips up at the back nicely offers more support.
I have mine at higher at the front and lower at the back. All day comfortable.
They often come up in the for sale section on here for a few hundred quid.
I actually wore out the cover a bit after so many miles so bought a new cover from Sargent at quite an expense and fitted it myself as I liked it so much.

Do they generally need a bit of wearing in?

Sargents do need a bit of breaking in. Well worth it though. As mentioned Airhawks are another option, but not everyone gets on with them. Once you find the right inflation level they are brilliant.

I have a standard height Sargent, very comfy

I did try a lower one (i still have it) on its high setting and that was good as well. Not much of a difference.
I also had a Sargent on my K1600 and they get a thumbs up from me.

I use a Sargent raised position at the front and low at the back with an airhawk on top so comfy I don`t want to get off.

When I bought my 2012 twin cam gsa just before lockdown I couldn’t ride it with the standard BMW seats it was so uncomfortable, every time I braked it was crushed nuts on the front part of the seat and sore buttocks all the time because the seat didn’t suit my arse. Bought a pair of second hand Sargent seats and it has totally transformed the bike. I did 650 miles in one day traveling back through Europe a couple of years ago without any bother at all.

the airhawk is something to get used to - if you're doing a long ride and you way overfilled filled all the luggage, the bike is already very different, then throw on the airhawk for the first time that year and wow you are disconnected from a very different feeling bike, and it feels super dodgy - but give it a few miles and it becomes normal

its the floating affect of you no longer glued by your bum to the bike that takes a while to become OK with... I can imagine if already struggling to reach the ground another inch disconnected maybe not be for every body - the post above about the right air level is critical - get this wrong and its nasty - its a bit like an air-bed - they are not meant to be pumped right up - sit on an air-bed you bum should be on the ground, then lie flat and it supports correctly everywhere

Like others, I also found the original seat really uncomfortable. I bought a Tony Archer gel pad modified seat on here, which was an improvement, but still had me shuffling about after a time. Next was a Sargeant, again bought from here, and again an improvement, but still not all day comfy for me as some say.
Regular stops and a few minutes off the bike works best for me.

Hi,
I bought a new 1200GS in 2007 with a BMW low seat fitted and it was terrible. My ass was in tatters after 40-50 miles.
I replaced it with a Sargeant Low seat and it was excellent. It took a few hundred miles to break it in but afterwards was much more comfortable than the original.👍
