Dealers seem to be holding stock of 2009 R1200GS's built with premium & dynamic packs, presumably because the factory is already turning out the new DOHC a la HP2 engine. Question is do I wait for the new technology and probably have to pay an extra 2% 2010 price rise + 2.5% VAT + pay for Vario Panniers or do I negotiate a deal now? Will the new engine be any better? Will the 2010 hold it's value better?........ Any thoughts appreciated from anyone other than dealers keen to clear old stock..!!!:comfort

Welcome, by the way :beerjug:

If you wait until the 'new' engine comes out, you'll then need to wait until the 'new ADV version of that model comes out, but no, hold on, in 2011, they'll do a 'SE' version of it, so you'll have to wait again......oops, after that, there will be a facelift version and free panniers.....:blast

There's always something new on the horizon, the 'next big thing'.......don't wait, JFDI, you can always sell it and buy the new one if and when you want to...the financial loss in doing that will be made up for by having a superb bike to ride NOW :rob:thumb2

I have an HP2 Sport, with its twin cam engine*. I also has a vanilla 1200GSA (06). I have both as they are totally different bikes, both very good at certain things, only.

It is meaningless what engine is in the Sport, even if outwardly (and many of it's inards) may - or may not - appear the same in the new 1200 GS variant. It will all depend on what state of tune / gearing they decide to slot into the engine, not what engine they are slotting into the frame, let alone any other modifications and improvements that may appear. Underseat exhausts, which will save space, but possibly heat your arse, may be one. Built in GPS (BuMW variety, naturally).... who knows? You can bolt a quickshifter onto a vanilla 2009 or earlier GS if you want to. That closes that door.

You can see the same thing happen when Honda bolt FireBlade engines into Hornets... you don't see many Hornets maxing out at 178 mph (not that many FireBlades, either, for that matter).

Of course punters do do engine chops. An 1100 engine in a 750 frame is known as a 7/11 in an amusing twist on the alldaynight stores. Maybe someone will do the same with a full-on Sport engine into a GS to teach BuMW how they should have done it, instead of going all namby-pamby?.... Though lots of people will no doubt suck their teeth as the oil filler cap IS ON THE WRONG SIDE! :D

* There is a thread somewhere, where we were told with absolute certainty by a UKGSer that it was impossible to do it in a Boxer engine. I guess BuMW didn't know. We were also told that the 09 HP2 Sport would be a watered down version of the 08 flavour machine, with no carbon fibre, no snappy Ohlins etc. Another certainty that fell into the weeds.

As Fanum (and Eddie) said.... "Do anything you wanna do".

PS The new VFR looks like it could be quite a good compromise between a GS and an outright sports bike, if you want to go down that route. There again, it could be a bag o'shite. We will all know on Valentine's day.

Wot 'e said.
And the new engine will only cost more to keep serviced given that the valve adjustment will be achieved by changing out the shims...and you can probably crack a great deal right now...and free panniers....:Motomartin

if it was me, and i had the money to pay the new price, i'd wait.

nothing wrong with the old 09 model, but i'd want to see what the new one is like before parting with so much cash.

Nah, spend it now.... We could all be dead in a week.

old ! the new engine is going to be a bitch to self service and could cost more to service .

lets face it the 1200 is no slouch anyway:thumb2

a dealer told me there will be 5 bhp more in the gs with the new engine and that otherwise there will be very little difference between the current model and the 2010 model
i know from the car game that when the new model comes out the spec is nearly always lower for a base model and you have to pay for all extras that might be included in the old model.
depends on what you want to do enjoy a 09 bike for a year and then trade for a 2010 model
keep your current bike for 6 months or more while you wait for a new model to become available or enjoy the current one and then change
there is always someone who will prefer the proven product to the new yet to be tested item
buy now enjoy and change next year if you think its worth it then

Ok, shall I rephrase the question. If you had the choice of DOHC 2010 or current 2009 for the same money which would you go for? Bearing in mind the new one may have teething problems and may cost more to service. :comfort

Another thought is that if you buy the bike now, in the spring ie 6 months time it's now a 6 months old bike, and not a new one :(

Upside of a bike now is it'll be run in time for the nice weather :)

Very predictable answer from me, but it's true.....I'd buy a mint 1150Adv and a KTM690 and still have change for a decent pissup :D

A 1200 is bad enough, but another NEW version with even more to worry about? :nono

Tom?

Tom!

Come out Tom, I can see you hiding... That disguise doesn't fool anyone anymore....

If all you want is an extra 5 bhp and more low end torque, just fit a set of Keihan headers to the mostly debugged 2008+ engine, and enjoy it now.

Having had a heart attack last year (focusses the mind somewhat) my view is why wait, just do it.

And I also have to say, early adopters of BMW bikes are now in the same category as those who buy the latest Microsoft OS. Just cannon fodder, sorry I meant beta testers :)
