Another thought is that if you buy the bike now, in the spring ie 6 months time it's now a 6 months old bike, and not a new one :(

Upside of a bike now is it'll be run in time for the nice weather :)

come on john if you picked the bike up sat morning it should be ready for the first service by sunday morning:D booked into the dealers for monday morning:D

it just has to be done:beerjug:

Very predictable answer from me, but it's true.....I'd buy a mint 1150Adv and a KTM690 and still have change for a decent pissup :D

A 1200 is bad enough, but another NEW version with even more to worry about? :nono

best of all worlds:beerjug:

The problem with spring bikes and servicing sems to be everybody wants their new bike when the sun is shining, and then want it's first service a week or two later

T'st! The buying public, eh?

Want their cake and to eat it, too.

Where will it all end?

Wot 'e said.
And the new engine will only cost more to keep serviced given that the valve adjustment will be achieved by changing out the shims...and you can probably crack a great deal right now...and free panniers....:Motomartin

I agree. Nout wrong with the current engine anyway.

Buy now, let someone else beta test the new one, or better still buy an 11** and put the other 7+K towards ferry / fuel and go exploring. :thumb

If you've been offered them both for the same money, the 2009 bike is priced too high.

Should be able to get a decent discount on a 2009 bike with all the knobs on.

I bought one of the first 2004 1200GS's.........................I wouldn't do a similar thing again, fek that.

The thing that'd be worrying me is the big service costs with the new 2010 engine, as experienced by existing HP2s. Do some research in this area before you commit.

Good point GS monkey,

HP2 Sport owners, pls post your service costs

600, 6000, 12000, 18000, and dare I ask for the cost of a 24000 mile service

FWIW I traded in my 54 plate 1200GS for a ADV 09 last month and paid 5k for a 11.6k bike.

I think that was a good deal , although i didnt take the free panniers just used it to bargain down the price.

The dealer seemed very keen to get rid of his 09 stock.

So did I once the dealers had finished lending it out as a demo bike for curious ninja riding warriors to rag senseless.........

I still have it, and its still a great bike.:nenau

If all you want is an extra 5 bhp and more low end torque, just fit a set of Keihan headers to the mostly debugged 2008+ engine, and enjoy it now.

Having had a heart attack last year (focusses the mind somewhat) my view is why wait, just do it.

And I also have to say, early adopters of BMW bikes are now in the same category as those who buy the latest Microsoft OS. Just cannon fodder, sorry I meant beta testers :)

+1 on that. Most people that have had a grim reaper experience have simpler priorities.
Plus, who can realy feel a 5hp difference except when you directly compare them back to back.

Go for it.

Just swapped my 1150gsa for a 59 1200 no regrets as yet, it's a great bike.
Learn to ride it in the winter, plus you won't get all anal about keeping a bike you got in the spring all nice and mint.
I did think about waiting for the new one,but then i would have missed 6 mnts riding this one,as has been suggested, your a long time dead.

I have an HP2 Sport, with its twin cam engine*. I also has a vanilla 1200GSA (06). I have both as they are totally different bikes, both very good at certain things, only.

It is meaningless what engine is in the Sport, even if outwardly (and many of it's inards) may - or may not - appear the same in the new 1200 GS variant. It will all depend on what state of tune / gearing they decide to slot into the engine, not what engine they are slotting into the frame, let alone any other modifications and improvements that may appear.
Hey Wapping…SNAP.

I agree 100% with you on that.
With the DOHC HP2 Sport, BuMW have taken the Boxer engine near to its ultimate limits of performance (with longevity/reliability). I believe the new GS DOHC engine will be I far softer state of tune and therefore under a lot less stress.
HP2S – 133bhp revving to 10krpm
New GS – 110bhp revving to maybe 9krpm??

Service costs and intervals are the same on my both the 1200GS and the HP2S, apart from the 30k service, which is “COULD” be costly, “IF” your HP2S has been constantly thrashed on track days etc. If not, then that service should also be comparable with the current 1200GS’s.

As for me reaching 30k on my HP2S?? mine is 18 months old with 4k on it.
My GSA is 5 months old with 9k on it…..horses for courses.:thumb2

Are you in cloud cuckoo land?

if it was me, and i had the money to pay the new price, i'd wait. Do you really think that, unless the £ recovers, BMW will maintain the UK price at about 75% of the rest of Europe? My advice is BUY NOW in 2009
