2010 fuel consumption

My 2010 GSA has been doing between 44 - 52 mpg during my recent 2,441 mile trip to Italian Alps fully laden with pillion passenger, camping equipment and climbing gear! I once stopped for a fill-up after 358 miles. 300 miles plus are the norm every fill-up. Several famous alp passes completed including a tortuous 52 bend Pass Stelvio UPHILL! 47.9mpg overall on the whole trip. 400 miles are possible on a single tank if ridden sensibly.

Rode my F800 for two years without re-setting any of the averages because that useful piece of information wasn't in the manual

The day I got my GS the sales guy showed me how to reset it and I was well annoyed. Such a simple little thing, you would have thought they would have mentioned it somewhere obvious in the manual.

Still, at least I know my F800 averaged 57 MPG across the entire two years I had it On my GS I keep resetting it in the hope it will start to go up

Mine is 2010 GSA with 1k miles. I only get 44 mpg in London and on motorways, but got 52 cross country from Bahnstormer to Brighton. 2008 GS got 50 -52 around London.

Sounds about the same as the 08 bikes overall. Not bad when you consider it I reckon.

My 08 gives a fairly consistent 50mpg average, erm, 'well loaded'.

My 2010 GS has averaged 50.4 over the last few months (hardly ever reset the average) which I'm happy with. I ride one up but being such a FB it's like having two on there and although I always start out with good intentions and riding like I've swallowed the police riders handbook I always seem to end up riding like I stole it....

I have got into the habit of resetting trip and fuel consumption every fill up.stop engine and reset before reaching for the pump. consumption hasn't really changed much after say 1500 miles running in. I avoid towns like the plague so maybe thats why I am averaging over 55mpg. I know its a bit nerdy but I find it useful to monitor fuel consumption since its so easy to do - gives me something to think about and an early warning of any changes in engine tune. With lower mileages between resets you can really see the effect of your speed and riding style as the display continually readjusts. And, no, I am not a plane spotter or accountant ....

When out for a run on Saturday I took the opportunity to capture a few test samples on my new (2 months old, 1k miles so far) R1200GS.

Cruising on the motorway at 70 MPH = 59 MPG
Country roads (50-60, up and down the gears etc) = 54 MPG
Working my way through town (30-40, stop-start) = 44 MPG

All of that was driving fairly calmly, I'm sure I could make a serious dent in those figures with a bit more active throttle use but I was trying to get an idea of what the 'best' figures might be.

I'm also not sure whether my fuel economy will change as the bike gets more miles on it.

Mine does an average of 3.125 miles per mug. For all you continentals out there, that works out at 2.753303964757709 miles per 250ml glass or 0.0550660792951542 miles per 5ml teaspoon (although it takes forever filling it up that way).

I use mine for work and my customers pay my fuel, so dont really understand this thing about getting 58.34 mpg, and the effort involved in increasing that figure by an average 0.5 miles of you lay flat on the tank. Each to their own.
If you dont reset the trips to often you end up with dogdy figures. If you are monitoring your average over 6000 miles, ie not reset, then you can do a hole tank of petrol and the average may only drop from say 50mpg to 49mpg because your averaging over 6000 miles, though your last 200 miles were at 33mpg.

I managed 33 mpg on my recent trip, coming home from Dover to Nottingham, great ride that one...............

According to the trip computer my 2010 GSA with 4000miles is averaging 49 mpg, Today the computer was telling me I had 67 miles worth of fuel left, the trip said I had covered 336 miles on the tank full, the fuel light had not yet come on either, better fill up I thought. Filled up and it took 33.57 Lts, my understanding is that the light comes on with approx 4 Lts of fuel left, if I had 67 miles left to run then the light should had have come on, even so 67 equates to about 1 and half Lts in the tank and it still took 33.57 Lt, in a tank that is only 33Lts capacity, so it must have had 35+ Lts in it, or it was empty and runs on fresh air, or it has a mysterious void hiding extra fuel. To cut a long story short my fuel guage can't be too accurate either or surely the light should have come on before it got that low, it must have been very close to spluttering to a halt, trip meter is the safest way to go and fill up at about 300 miles to be safe.

Unless you are one of the few people who follows the instructions and only fills the tank to the point where the pump hose cuts off then chances are you are getting a few extra litres into the tank over and above the rated capacity. With my GS on its sidestand and filling to the very top (which I do regularly) I reckon I can get 2-3 litres of extra fuel in there. Given how much larger the tank is on the GSA I imagine you might even be able to squeeze a bit more in over and above the rated maximum.

As a result there was probably a lot more left in the tank than you might think.

My hand book 2010 GSA tells me it has 33 litres + 4 litres reserve making total capacity 37L

Interesting to hear your quotes re fuel consumption.Has anybody else had experience of an 'accelerator' ? I fitted one to my 2010 gs and it certainly improves the richness of the mixture, but to the detriment of economy, as I am now getting 180 miles from a tank. This is probably partly due to the fact that most of our riding round here is on little used country roads, where you are off and on the bikes accelerator constantly. Might be time to remove it !!
