2015 Adventure airbox re-design

having read tons of posts on ADVrider i've concluded that the airbox is likely to leak wherever you live. problem may be worse in hot locales, as the box may warp more? if you live somewhere dusty, it will ingest more dust.

there seems to be a couple of problems with the airbox that ktm have chosen to ignore, but can be fixed in an hour two for £40 odd.

I have some of that magic plumbers tape stuff that sort of welds to itself if you know what I mean. I'd have thought a dose of that around the seal between the box and the lid would make it completely air tight and would cost about £3.50 ...!!

What's the fix Cookie?

AFAICT there are three options, not counting ignoring the problem, which seems to work for some.

1. the most popular is the unifilter from australia. the filter is stiffer so doesn't move in it's mount and it includes a foam gasket that seals the lid properly. ktm australia are, or were, providing these free to 1190 owners.

2. dyna filter. looks like a k&N and might even be a ktm powerpart? stiffer like the unifilter, but still needs the lid sealing. some use unifilter gasket, others use RTV.

3. US made rottweiller replacement airbox assembly. people seem to like it. might need a power commander, not sure.

my view is that as a minimum, the airbox should be checked for dirt. might be better done after the bike has been run in and got nice and hot and the ram air has been in effect? if it were my bike, i'd at least seal the lid.

you need to seal the join across the box over the airfilter, which would be tricky as it is internal.

the problem is worse in dusty environments because, unsurprisingly, there is more dust in the air. the airbox is not aware of it's location and just as much air will bypass the filter. how much dust is contained in that air is something of a lottery. somewhere on ADVrider is a pic of an airbox that looks like an ashtray inside. the owner rides road only IIRC and lives in dorset.

dusty environment tends to go hand in hand with hot environment. so i suspect warping of the box, which seems to be the root of the problem, might be more prevalent. that's just my theory though :nenau

another thing: the design of the filter mounting is the reverse of convention where the filter would be held in place by the vacuum. so another problem is that the airfilter can be sucked off (ooh er) it's position in the airbox creating gaps around it's edge.

It's going to get pretty hot on top of that motor

I'm sure KTM will come up with a fix :clap

That's what the Gs owners keep saying .. :)

the airbox came out in 2013 and the design was changed for the 2014 MY. it did nothing to address the problem. in fact it's hard to see what it did do. KTM europe and usa (i think) say there's no problem. KTM south africa and australia say there is and offer a fix.

maybe the 2015 bikes have yet another design that actually works, and maybe that will be a retrofit to earlier bikes? maybe. i'm not holding my breath, but maybe our bikes should :)
