990 SMT Launch

Quite correct, Wine and keyboards ! :blast .

Not a good mix but easily done ;)

I read more universal praise in "Bike" magazine today-that's a worry, all the mags dishing out universal praise :eek (cannot remember the last time I've bought so many bike comics) .
As Arsey has said, the big hurdle may well be price,at £9595 it's well into GS territory and from the little I have experienced and read about KTM dealers and their levels of after sales service maybe they are not yet geared up to the expectations of customers who are spending the thick end of £10k :nenau

Well I had a unexpectedly nice day today, took my 990 ADV for it's service at mounters and as previously requested over a month ago got a loan bike.990SMT !
Had it for the day ,took a lot of time looking it over in the garage and out on the road, shite weather for most of my time riding but it is a cracking bike. Not sure about the looks at first but as you get to climb around it it grew on me.
Fuelling is sorted as is the gearbox compared to my Adv. All round nice ride.
Got slightly annoyed at the steam coming from the front of the bike and misting your visor when you stop in the rain eg at the lights and also the fuel cap is cheap and hard work to get off.
Jumped straight back on my adventure with now sorted brakes (Nice one mounters done off there own back) and was happy to do so.
So if I was looking at a SMT and not rode a Adventure I would ride em back to back. Both great bikes even if dealing from a different pack so to speak

Some not very interesting photos after my snooze:pullface(weather was clear by then)

It may be a good bike but at the price quoted surely a 990 Adv would be a better buy for a dual purpose bike?? :nenau

Nice pics Bob,it was cleaner when you had it than it was today but thanks for leaving half a tank of fuel in it for me :D
Nice bike to ride, quick and agile-as expected, relatively good shelter from the windblast and a very supple and comfortable ride-which is better than I expected, accelerating hard through 2nd-3rd-4th calls for some caution though as the front end starts to feel very light :augie.
I had the bike for an hour and I was very impressed-it's definitely a contender for me and the dealer offered me a good deal against my bike,am I ready to give up my GS and move to the dark side? I'm not sure.........the ride home on my GSA served to remind me how far these things get beneath your skin..........I'm going to ride the 09 version of the 1200GSA and then decide,it's a 50/50 call for me at the moment

It is a good bike Nick and it's not cheap but the SM-T is dual purpose;

SM-T; reasonably well equipped and comfortable enough to get you to the mountains-an absolute riot when you get there :D

GSA;An effortless and comfortable carry all to get you to the mountains in style and acquits itself quite well when in the mountains given it's size and weight :D

Or did you mean dual purpose as in on/off road ability? I suspect you did ;)
I don't rate the GS as an off roader (even though other people do-and good luck to them) I've had dirt bikes since I was 14 and to me a dirt bike should be light, powerful, responsive and agile, doesn't sound much like a GS to me

:popcorn

I knew you would like it Steve but i'm sure you would end up hooning around at a pace that most are trying to stay away from and indeed have come to adventure bikes to avoid. If you get my drift.:bluesn2s:tarka
Great bike though.

Hideously ugly.

My mate the local KTM dealer took his demo SMT down local cafe on Sunday.
I didn't even bother to try it.
Looks like it melted.

Yuk

You sure someone didn't spill a cup of the local brew on it ??? - You know what that tea is like !

He's Too old and ponderous to own a KTM:augie

Stick with your BMW and slippers Steve :D

And I did read that you cant lock the KTM panniers to the bike.:blast

Nothing that couldn't be got around with a pacsafe or similar I suspect.

Went for a test ride on the 09GSA today,as expected they offered a better deal (by some margin)............
The ride? 09 GSA has noticeably more urge low down than mine and I don't find mine lacking, the gear shift is noticeably smoother and notch free-again no real complaints about this on my current ride, everything else looks and feels fairly familiar.
The deal? Better trade in price from BMW by more than £500,add on the free panniers (with models registered after 1st April) and the offer of a superior specced bike from the showroom floor than the bike I had specced for the same price and, financially at least,it's a no brainer,I've maintained for some time (to anyone who will listen) that I wouldn't buy the same model bike as the one I currently have,so I'm going to think on it over the weekend and decide for sure on Monday.

A little analysis of my favourite types of rides/trips involve long slogs to the mountains,hoon around for a few days then a long slog home,as I see it,from the 2 bikes I have shortlisted;

KTM ;Great in the mountains, unproven over long slogs but may acquit itself better than expected, great for short local runs, unproven (for me )at carrying luggage and pillion, residuals should be good judging by current used prices.

GSA: Great for the long slog,Acquits itself rather well in the mountains,is useful and quite good fun for local rides, can carry luggage, pillion with ease and has proven residuals.
It might sound clear cut to some (it is financially) but there's a little of that old buy with your heart or your head thing going on at the moment.
To be continued...................

Too good a deal to turn down, that and the doubts over the SM-T's suitability for carrying luggage and/or a pillion coupled with it's meagre tank range mean it's another GSA for me,pick it up in a couple of weeks, the king is dead-long live the king ;)
But if I could have 2 bikes..........................

saw the SMT at the weekend at P+H Crawley. Not sure on the looks and to sit on not much different to the 990SM I sold to get my GSA. The tank is the same as the SM making it uncomfortable for my Gangly legs .I had a screen fitted to mine which did little to deflect windblast the SMT seems to offer better protection but at the cost of looks. For me the GSA has it but they are for different markets /people.I will have a look at the SMR when its here as it fitted like a glove at the NEC ,but if the fueling is still crap I dont think a purchase will be made!:nenau
