A bikers bike ..... (Can I come in .... ??!)

Thanks shay I'll take a look ....

I understand that the clocks are being tweaked and that mk1 clocks have all been used up. Not sure what the tweak is, not sure whether it's relevant to theft or some other issue, but I'm waiting for the mk2 clocks that are in production ...

Probably so a GS appears as fast as a KTM :D

Don't get too smug Mellors ..... I understand the early 1190's had a woefully inaccurate speedo ....

Giles,

Good test report !!!

I keep looking longingly at the 1190R, having tested the standard 1190 last year.

It's even more appealing with the price drop. But every time I go into the garage and see my 950 Super Enduro,I don't think I could ever replace it, and the 1190R is really just a 950 SE on steroids.

But as so many tossers seem to be getting onto the KTM thing, perhaps I'll be able to pick up a low mileage 1190R in a year or so when someone like Nutty switches back to a BoringMW !!!

Enjoy the new bike when you get it.Great decision !!!!

You're a longer time dead !

.... and don't I just know that :thumb

But I'm quite simply not in the market for
1) A new bike
2) A larger bike

I'm off the 'merrygoround' and perfectly happy with my 110,000 mile immaculate and trouble free F800GS and super likkle 650 XCountry :D

:beerjug:

Yep .... Cheers Micky and Arsey .... !!

You have a bloody lot to answer for, now find myself contemplating whether I neeeeeeed to swap my 2013 1190A for a new R model....

Or do I wait to see what the new 1050A is like?

Giles,

I'm 11,000 miles into mine, I can honestly say it's the best bike I've ever owned and I agree with all you've said :) You can sort the lawn mower exhaust note out with a Remus, which is smaller than the Akro. For luggage I'd recommend Holan boxes, if you go for the boxes designed for the Remus/Wings they are very close fitting, symmetrical (with a cut out for the exhaust) well made and much better looking than the standard bread bins, I looked at the TT versions but the frames are like the Forth Road Bridge and the exhaust side box looks like and afterthought.

Enjoy the bike, I'm sure you will.

Dave

Thanks blokes. Is the cat IN the exhaust does any body know???

I have the Akra, it is a bit of an expensive chunky monkey, but sounds quite nice. I think the Wings short can is probably the nicest looking option, if you don't care about not having the EU stamp etc. The Arrow can is a good price though and possibly worth a look.

Ok thanks ...
I'm wondering if my gs Remus can will fit? (Even if I have to tweak a bracket to hang it?)

Dave,
I know you do a lot of two up touring on your bikes. How do you (and your partner) find it for two up stuff compared to your previous GS'es? I've been agonising for a couple of months over the whole GS / KTM thing and it's only really the two up question that's stopping me from going orange (either a good 990 or 1190 if I can stretch to it).

Please excuse the hijack Giles - great to read about your thoughts and decision making regarding your new bike.

For what it's worth, my Mrs really disliked riding pillion on the 990A in comparison to the GSA's I had previously (too vibey, seat comfort etc). Conversely, I much preferred the riding experience of the 990A to the GSA. However, she is quite happy as a pillion on the 1190A (other than the grab handle position rubbing on back of thighs - dealer said they are raised slightly to accommodate the bread box panniers??).

i'm sure i read somewhere that the 2015 bikes have lowered panniers and grab handles.

Matt,

Compared to my 1200 GSA the 990 was more compact but no less comfortable for either Blondie or I however it was noisy, wind noise that is. The 1190 is more spacious and just as comfy as the 990. I asked Blondie for her views and they are the same. From a riding point of view both KTM's are much more involving and enjoyable to ride than a BM, the 990 is super light and carries weight really well, manually adjustable suspension means you can always adjust to whatever load and once adjusted the weight seems to disappear. Only drawback with the 990 is the way the brakes feel, they don't have a great amount of initial bite but they do work pretty well. The 1190 has great brakes but, in the standard form with electronically adjustable suspension, is not as good as the 990 two up with camping gear. You feel the weight more if you know what I mean. It's not a big difference though. In a nutshell i'd rate the bikes 1190, 990, 1200 GSA for two up use, I put the 1190 in front of the 990 in spite of the fully loaded benefit to the 990 as this is marginal and the 1190 is just so much fun with loads of power, great brakes what more do you want? You won't be disappointed with either.

Dave
