Got a 2001 R1150GS. The ABS lights flash alternately, usually when i pull away theres a slight clunk then the lights go off. It is no longer doing that it stays on. Anyone have any ideas? heard about being able to reset the sensor? any clues on how to do that?

Also can the abs be removed easily or is it a big job?

this how i removed mine ,i am not saying its the right way,but it worked.
removed both front and rear sensors from the wheels
also both abs rings
the relay thingy out of the fuse box
and the bulbs out of the dash

sorted
but then again the bike was a cheapie

That's not removing the ABS. Hilarious. :D. :D

I wouldn't remove it, you have the superior pre-servo abs. There is loads of info on how to reset the abs lights or a quick Google will give you the answer, it's easy to do. Your problem may be as simple as a battery on its way out or a wiring fault in the front or rear sensor.

When the lights are both flashing together and you don't get the "squeee clunK" when riding off you need to take a look at the wheel speed sensors. For me the rear one had a furred up connector. Trace the wires back from the sensors to find the connectors. A quick squirt of WD40 and an ABS reset fixed mine. Failing that it may be a faulty ABS sensor or a break in the wire preventing the ABS control unit from receiving signals.

ABS reset on my 2002 1150 GS works like this:

1) Open the diagnostics connector that is under the seat;
2) Short out the pins connected to the brown/blue and brown wires with a piece wire. Some say short the brown/blue wired pin to the frame but that doesn't work for me;
3) Turn on ignition and hold down ABS button for 60 seconds. Some say 8 seconds but that doesn't work for me;
4) Turn off ignition;
5) Remove short and close up the diagnostics connector.

Hope this helps.

I've never had to remove the simple early ABS on a bike, it's easily and cheaply fixable compared to the later ABS/servo, of which I'must have removed 60-70 units :D

Is it the battery?

Early abs was very reliable. If not the battery then it'll more than likely be a sensor/sensor spacing

Listen to this one... He knows the way

I was having similar issues (see recent thread)
I decided eventually it was probably a battery issue. I've fitted a new battery a couple of days ago and no issues since (except when I pressed the ABS button instead of the starter duh :blast )

ha ha ,aye yes i know this steptoe,but it looks like its got no abs now,and hey the bike was a cheapie to use through the winter :D
and it makes me feel better ,and that good enough for me ha ha

On my Sept 2002 build 1150GSA, the warning light is constantly on and learned to live with it. Sometimes the ABS light flashes when starting bike but, can live with that as well.
I have learnt to respect distance between my front wheel and the obelisk in front of me on the road. It has been a long time since the ABS kicked in so do not know if it works or not.

I will give it a good winter clean and check the gap with the gauge. Meanwhile wait for a dry day to practice my emergency stops again.

Sorry to say so, but this is a waste of time. "Dry day?" indeed!
If you are going to practice at all, you need to practice on a wet day, because these are the circumstances in which you are most likely to need to be able to stop quickly, and also the ones in which you are least likely to be able to do so.
In fact, they are the ones in which ABS is most likely to save you.

See my thread about feeling stupid.......just in case !!!!
