acceptable play

can some one tell me ,after a hundred miles or so there is a very small amount of play in the final drive bearing,holding the rear wheel at six and twelve i have a tiny amount of play maybe 1mm or so ,when the bike is stone cold there is no play at all,do bmw have an acceptable amount allowed.

Eh the bikes only done 100 miles and your checking the wheel bearings? Or do you mean after 100 miles constant riding? Either way I read on here that 1mm is the max allowed movement... but there is no way you could gauge that by moving the wheel you really need to have a dial gauge on the disc to check the movement.

That is almost exactly the same as mine...... Apparently, 1 mm is the acceptable 'play'...

Mine has zero hot or cold, has it always been there

I dunno if they can be like that from new, but if mine went from no play to 1mm I would assume it is on its way out.

Change doil again this weekend (as fitting new tyre) and it now comes out pretty clean since I removed the sludge the stealers left in it (despite claiming to have changed it) and replaced it with each tyre change I can keep an eye on it too Hoping regular changes stave off the dreaded FD failure.

Maybe drop the oil and see whats in it.

Maximum play is 1mm at no more than 35 degrees C, so pretty much cold. And, unless I'm mistaken, the Crown Wheel bearing (which is the one I had replaced as I had too much play) is sealed so dropping the oil won't be relevant to that bearing.

nnoooo its got 11000 miles on it ,ha ha ,i did mean after a ride.

and yes your right should be done with a dial meter ,i am just feeling it myself when stopping for a coffee,and it has the tiniest amount of movement .
when its tone cold no movement at all.

oil was changed about 1000 miles ago ,there was no sludge or anything for that matter on the speedo sensor.

You don't need to use a dial guage unless you need a precise measurement. I just rigged up a cable tie pointing at the rim by pushing it through the slots in the bottom of the silencer housing. Maybe not easy to visualise but the point is that it can be done if you think about it.
I had approx 1mm play when warm for several thousand miles. Didn't appear to worsen until I did a couple of thousand round Scotland in September. By the time I got back it was more like 4mm and oil mist was starting to show around the RH axle end. Fixed under warranty, 18,000 miles, both crown wheel bearings.
If you only have 1mm at the moment just keep a regular check on it. Unlikely to suddenly collapse on you but will defineitely get worse at some point, though that could be a long time.

getting mine done today dealer said 1mm is all thaats allowed and i had nearly 3mm
only 9000 miles on my bike is there a batch of faulty bearings or why are they going so soon

Booked in for next month to replace the bearing. 17000 miles and 1mm of movement. Dealer reminded me to push back the brake pads when checking for movement.

Pidcocks

I had over 1mm of play which was picked up on the Mot as a advisory.
Took it in to Pidcocks, Long Eaton, Notts said yes it needs doing had it in didn't phone me for days (as is the norm with them) chased them about it said theres no point in doing it as week can't fit them without leaving play and we would be defrauding BMW warranty
A independent says it needs doing but the bearings are covered by warranty so I'm going to take it to Wollastons to see what they think.
I may be being paranoid but when that discovered my 04 was under warranty there tune changed tried to tell me it wasn't covered so i got it confermed that it was.

Do they get less money for warranty work or does it need to be really loose before warranty will pay

Need to resolve this before my next big trip........
