Alaska Part deux.....the search for Milk Shakes

Dredge Number 4 is at Dawson City and was last used in the 60's to dredge for gold. It's an incredible piece of kit and was used for around 40 years to get the gold out of the ground. It's like a giant gold panning machine and moved half a mile per year ripping up the ground in front of it. It paid for itself in the first year and was 95% efficient in getting the gold. Too much info to go into detail but suffice to say it's well worth a visit if you are quick.

The Canadian government are withdrawing their funding for the manning of this due to budget cuts which is a real shame. It's a really interesting piece of local Yukon history.

There is still gold mining up here on the Klondike and people are still making a decent living.

Still, one good thing to come out of the end of teh Dredging is the number of parts which are compatible with 11**'s. Gary found a brake caliper pin and some final drive parts.........which was nice

At the end of the TOTW, you catch a cracking little ferry across to Dawson City. Big queue because of the feckin RV's which are the size of buses and they only load one at a time. Not too bad though as they let the cars and bikes squeeze on which really pisses the RV owners off

You meet some nice people as well and this Harley Rider from tennessee had done 104,000 miles on his 2006 bike. They aren't all arseless chap wearing posers

Well, it's a bit of a story. The second container arrived before I loaded the 1st and one of the bikes was damaged. Luckily it was yellow so we switched plates and all panels so as not to confuse US and Canadian customs. It's now coming back down the Alcan and although a little dirty, it's going pretty well. The good news is, it has finally got to Prudhoe Bay

Skygod reckons he can clock the mileage so your warranty and service records will be OK.

These big lads and their families happily stroll around the edge of the Alcan and walk across it at will. They are the daddies that's for sure!!! The Canadian government has kindly made the verges good grazing which the truckers hate because contact with one of these is major money

Anyway, they are fairly docile and don't seem to notice us

Boatmans Goat

Boatman's Goat is so called because on the 1st trip, Boatman claimed to have seen Goats and in fact thought he'd winged one. None of us believed him because he was on high power pain killers for his back at the time and we though he was hallucinating Anyone who knows Symon will tell you this is entirely possible

Sitting in the Toad River lodge just relaxing when someone shouted "Beaver" so there was a mad rush similar to a WW2 fighter scramble. We were all just a little disappointed to find that it was these industrious little creatures building a dam in the lake behind the lodge Great to see them in the wild though

A few of diverted off the road to the Laird River Hot Springs which lies just off the Alcan. Feck me, they weren't joking when they said hot

Great relaxing half hour but how the hell are we going to get rid of the smell of Sulpher?

Truck Porn

For those of us interested in these beasts, they run out of Alberta and travel up and down the Alcan supplying all the stations between Dawson Creek and Fairbanks.

Loads are around 55,000 litres with an all up weight of 63,500kgs. When they are coming up behind you at 75mph you get out of the damn way
