Much talk about it, so if you want to give it a go this video I came across might help. He is no professional, so gives you a bit of confidence that it can be done by...almost anyone :D

But he gave it a go . And sometimes watching someone who’s keen but perhaps awkward may remind all of us as we try something new and go tho the same . I personally enjoyed the clip .

That’s me. Keen but awkward :D I do hope that if I ever did give it a go and it was going tits up - one of you lot would be happy to bail me out :thumby:

I had a go today. No way could I get the spline to come apart. 8k miles r1200gs lc.

Really gave the rear a good shake. had about 15mm movement. removed the gator on one side a bit of surface rust bit not to bad. I was worried that i really gave it some brute force it would come out to of the engine side and cause more problems. Gave the bike a good clean and re-assembled.

Need to do some further research

Grease with molybdenum? I thought sliding drive spines need molybdenum paste, like Optimol. Different things altogether.

An awkward, unnecessary job, A solution to a problem that simply isn't there.
What problem is caused by a rusty drive shaft or splines?
Is there anyone on here that has had a problem caused by it ?
I've never heard of any problems? In the very rare occasion of splines being ripped off would have happend anyway. Thousands and thousands of BMW Spline drives never ever fail....
Its all a load of boo llux

On reflection I agree. I can buy a used final drive inc swingarm from 250 to 500 from Ebay so will take my chances

What I am unsure of is if you can change the gaiter without the need to drop the final drive?

Nope, it has to be dropped.

That and failed shafts have destroyed rear swing arms. Catastrophic.

Any ideas on how I can get them apart. Bike under warranty.

If the gator had a tiny hole would it be bmws problem?

Ask Spout here

Not a WC, but a HP2e with a similar rear drive shaft and bevel design

Rusty rear splines which seized and exploded the UJ on the motorway and locked the rear wheel IIRC

Not bull shit at all

Water gets past the boot at the rear and rusts everything up

Do a search and you will find a few cases

(Edit seems Mr Bean has had one go too)

I don't doubt there have been cases. Machines breakdown.
But all this fuss about a problem that simply isn't there.
Oh well. Gives people something to do whilst in lockdown. And peace of mind. Which to be honest is the main factor at play here. It's a nice feeling to know it's all greased up and lovely.

It’s a problem, not a huge one

Americans love a spline lube though

speaking as someone who has a lifetime of experience of agricultural machinery if you don't lube your shaft you can get loads of grief.:D

If you happen to be lucky enough to own an early version without the final drive drain screw, there is only one way (short of up-ending the entire bike) to replace the fd oil and thats by dropping the fd down off the splines So seized splines would severely hamper this maintenance function.

The tricky part of the whole job is re-engaging the spline while lifting the FD they make it look so easy on youtube videos. It took me ages the first time I did it, however i didn't use any wire.

Turning the brake disc helps while trying to engage something the guy in the first video failed to do.

Marcopolo if you cant get it apart, if i were you I'd get it done professionally thereafter do it yourself.
