Annual inspection advice

Ok guys, sorry to talk about servicing again, but having problems getting a good response from my dealer which is a little annoying.

Situation is, my bike is an ex demo Sep 06 registration (07 spec). Its 600 mile service was done in March 07. I bought it with 2K miles on it in June 07, and was told at the time it would need servicing my next march at the lastest, unless I hit 6K before that.

now, I've just taken it in today for its 6K plus annual, and been told that it needs its second annual inspection, not its first as its in its second year. I think this is a bit unfair, as its 1 year almost to the day since its 600 mile sercvice, so I think its due its first annual inspection.

just wanted an opinion from the peeps on here. I'm going to contact BMW UK to try and get an official response, as I don't think the dealer is being very clear.

not a rant, just trying to see if I'm being too anal.

I think the brake fluid change is every two years after the first annual inspection, so the dealer might be trying to save you money

By my calculations it should have had the first annual in September 07, did they do it early for you, and is it signed up in the service record book? The date it's 600 mile inspection was carried out is IMO, irrelevant.

Mine was sold to me second hand, but only a couple of months old. It'd had it's 600 mile service and I was told that servicing was annually 'or' every 6000 miles.

After 12 months I'd still not hit 6000 miles so I had the 12 month inspection done. By the time the bike was 2 years old I took it in for it's annual and it's 6000 miles service, at 5000 miles. The idea behind that was that I knew I was going to go upto Scotland the following month which would've taken me to 6000 miles. Williams said it made sense to do it earlier as I wasn't a high mileage rider and some of the work would effectively be duplicated anyway.

As it happened my Dad told me I needed a mortgage the following week, so I never got to go to Scotland on it

I guess my fundamental question is, should the first annual inspection happen 1 year after its registration, or 1 year after the 600 mile service?

6000 miles service, every 6000 miles not 6000 after first service.

Annual, annually, doesn't mention after 600 miles service.

Jonny you are not living very dangerously are you..?

It really dosent matter that much whether a bike is serviced 1000miles before of after 6000miles or a month before or after its anual inspection... in general you should think 6000 miles OR one year, even if you have only done 4000 miles, because in theory some fluids may deteriorate over time. Fact is with most modern bike fluids you can safely go much longer. Following exactly what BMW tell you will make you a dull boy.

Service a bike at your convenience. If you are planing a long trip and its another month till you annual servise it makes sense to do it earlier and have the peace of mind on your trip.

I live in a place where we have only one dealer in the whole country, (a place as big as the UK) my previaous bike was a R1200C that went 3 years without a dealer touching it, all i did was change the oil once, bike was always sweet. I'm not recomending that, but just take into account that annual mean roughly that.

Same thing happened to me when I bought a second hand bike and went to bwm for service. I was told it also needed an annual at the same time. The upshot was I hadn't done my homework and ended up with a bill for a 6k service and an annual service.
When I checked the manual and the difference in the work between the annual and 6k I realised that I had basically paid double for the work which was carried out.
Now I check to see what mileage service work is needed and what annual service work is needed. That ensures that I only pay for the work which needs to be done.
