Are old map updates transferrable ?

I've been using my 550 for the last few years and have bought map updates for it every year, my Wife has just bought one secondhand but the maps are still 2007 so quite out of date.

My question is can I use the map updates I have bought for mine over the last few years to update her device or are they device specific, and once I update mine to a new version of the maps does the old one then become unassociaited and can be used on another device ?

They are forever tied to the device they were unlocked for I'm sorry to say. Garmin used to issue a 2nd unlock code for a 2nd device owned by the same person as the first, however, that was withdrawn a few years ago.

Lifetime updates can be had from handtec for less than £50.
