Bar risers, anybody want some?

I see an idea. Will work on it.

Dave78 there is a guy I know well with an earlier GS which I have to corner when I see him down at the club. I can then use his GS for making the bar risers.

I've got a 2006 GSA and I don't live too far from Oakley near turvey if you want to come and check mine out. Not really interested in raising my bars but willing to help out if needed

Mind you if I sit on yours and it feels ok I could be tempted

Thanks for the offer but I have measured my mates 04 reg GS so these are being designed. The engineering shop has put the machining of the bar risers back due to being behind with orders and the bank holiday. I have to make my apologies for the delay. The design and test fitting and then redesigning and machining is taking longer than I anticipated.

Gazza12adv you're welcome to come over and have a feel.

Might just do that at some point. Should get to the Thursday meet at some point, I've got quite a few mates who go over most weeks. Usually out with another couple of mates for a steak and a few beers in ampthill though.

Once again apologies for the delay chaps. Eventually the engineering shop had it done. I'm not happy with the way the anodizing came out, it discoloured the aluminium, tried all sorts of treatment and different times anodizing it without success. So back to square 1. The alu used is H30 so decent stuff. At the moment a test piece is at getting a powder coat. Tomorrow I'll have a look at it and decide if I'm happy with the product or not so fingers crossed.

The lessons learnt here will be applied to the 06 batch so I expect to be better at it.

Thanks for the Update, One correction my bike is 2004 model, so I am also "06 batch "

Hiya

Any updates? My recent trip is over and I could do with the risers before my next trip in September.

Cheers

Got the finish spot on but it is very expensive. A bit of negotiating is going on.

So the painter wants £20 a pair to paint these bar risesers to match the finish on the original BMW bar clamps. I almost fell off me chair. I must say that the finish is very close if not spot on and it is a 3 step process. Unfortunately that would make the bar risers expensive. At just under £50 including P&P. This was not my target and would have liked it to be lower. I'll post the pictures on here much later tonight and let the collective wisdom decide. In the mean time I would like to try another painter.

The missus and me is leaving for holiday soon and I would to have it sorted by then. Doesn't help that I volunteered to do all the overtime available giving me not a great deal of time. 2 days in fact after the last night shift.

Here is a collection of the trials. These are the 30mm risers. Missing from them is the 40mm risers which has been powder coated, suppose to be silver but came out light grey with a metallic finish. They have been bead blasted before treatment to try and get a texture.

From left to right: Etched and HF acid treated (white aluminium finish); etched; etched and anodized for 20min; anodized for 5min (nice gun metal colour because of the silica deposits from the bead blasting), clear powder coat (gives it a yellowish tint); silver paint which matches the bar clamps.

Black anodizing would not be feasible on a bead blasted surface due to the different effect it would have colour.

What do you say?

I would have ordered a set but too late for me as I have a set of Touratech riders already fitted. Am sure you have covered this but from a safety aspect make sure the bolts you use / order meet the required spec and are tourqued correctly to whatever tightness specified by manufacturer. I was shocked when I fitted the Touratech risers to see that the actual handlebars are only fixed by two bolts to upper fork mounting plate, the other two bolts hold the clamps together. I do have a torque wrench but popped up to my local BMW dealer who checked bolt tightness for me at no cost :)

I'm so damn happy today as I got the bar risers from the painter and it looks good. The colour might be slightly off but I'm happy. Come Monday its going back to the machine shop to fit the locating pins. Hopefully I can get them out before the end of next week before we go on holiday. No pictures at the moment as I'm at work. Last night shift and a bit of overtime on Sunday and then I'm on leave. Yippee.

what are the chances, her indoors has bought a set of risers as an anniversary pressie. Theres me thinking she never listens to anything bike??? ah well.I'll ask one of the lads if they want the risers I was going to buy from you mate. They look damn fine though.:blast

There is enough bar risers and hopefully they will be finished when I'm back from holiday.

will they be ready by the end of the month, as a little trip to the cotswolds is on the cards .........
