Hi All, some of you may have already seen this on a previous thread on a different topic - whilst in Croatia i stopped to check my location and the bike refused to start - push button slight click and dash lights all go out. Clearly a battery issue. Jump start the bike off you go again - occasionally it will start on the button but not with any certainty. Needless to say changed the battery the following day - all good. my question is - this is the second time this has happened to me now this battery was 2 years old, similar to the previous one and both show exactly the same symptoms. These are good batteries - recommended from this forum in fact - so my question is how do i safeguard against this failure again (what's actually going on?) - carry a jump starter battery device? If so can you recommend a suitable lightweight battery jump starter ? ta

First question

What battery was fitted originally that failed?

What was the replacement battery fitted ?

Do you have a tracker fitted ?

Do you have an alarm fitted ?

If you had like for like batterys fitted , i'd be avoiding that brand/ unit for some time

Trackers & alarms will deplete the battery if not used ( and thats any battery lol)

although the BMW alarm will turn off if the battery voltage drops too low

Trackers connected to the battery will draw power until the battery is too low to operate afaik

There was a bad batch of the lithium lightweight units fitted to early bikes which caused them to die :(

Many people use Mottobat with no issues (a few have had issues, but more with no issues)

Some have gone for a hybrid AGM lithium battery ( not cheap , but good results )

I cant remember the first replacement battery - a well known brand but not sure which £80 ish. the latest battery is a well known recognised brand (need to check when i get back to the bike) purchased in Croatia 52 euros. yes the bike has a tracker, the battery is on my ultimate charger all the time its not in use. its not a question of the battery going flat, it just gets to a point where it cant handle the power required to start the bike?

GSD321 on utube had a new starter fitted not long back at very low mileage, seem to remember he had similar problems with his 1250 ,
Maybe worth watching 🤔

Motobatt by any chance?

I've had two GSes that went through batteries every couple of years, until I had the factory-fitted alarm immobilisier removed from the 2005 1200GS, and the tracker removed from my 2021 1250GS. Using a battery charger delayed the demise, but I think it 'ages' the battery being continuously trickle charged.

After removal, both bikes were fine for years.
