Big pile of dogshit

There may be the odd lemon, but to date I have never broken down in the 40 odd years I have been riding boxers, and by and large, the newer models have been every bit as reliable as the older ones, which needed more constant fettling (air heads) but at least they were easier to work on being far less complex. The introduction of pretty meaningless emissions standards for bikes has led to over complexity and reliance on electronics which seem to be the weak link on so many modern vehicles. They're not the only ones, so I feel the whole bmw unreliability tag is blown out of all proportion, at least based on my own experiences with them. Repeat a mantra three times and you start to believe it. What does seem to be true is there seems a few more "lemons" than there used to be so perhaps PDI checks need to be more rigorous? This applies equally to Triumphs, KTMs, Harleys and others. I had nothing but rouble with my last Harley, most of which was down to poor PDI checks and poor workmanship by the dealership concerned. I wouldn't touch another with a bargepole for that reason. I trust my beemer far more, more to the point, I have a good local dealership and trust them.

What Harley did you have? I actually like them - easy to work on and hold value decent. Quite an involving ride too

About £32, can’t be arsed to faff around just to save a tenner.

Not being stuck on a dark German/Belgian/French roadside in the rain trying to find a torx driver to undo the jump start cover is worth paying a few quid now for.

Thanks again for the idea, it hadn’t crossed my mind to fit an easy access cable. :thumb2

Actually saw the motherfuckers in Halfords today for £13.

3/8 Torx short bits
1/2 Torx long bits

That looks similar to an optimate lead. Am I right in thinking you’re jumping off the bike through it ?

I bet he’s looking forward to a long and happy relationship with his new BMW:mad:
Show him this thread, poor sod. A good job Easy Rider was there with a booster pack.
Not the one from Halfords. But the Noco Boost X-Connect Adapter GBC007 is the right one to do this with.

Like James Bond to the rescue !

Booster cable arrived and fitted. Oddly when plugged in and turned on, the NoCo strobes (ready for boost) as expected but I can hear a faint relay click or similar noise from under the battery cover.

Investigating further.

Edit: the relay click is coming from the NoCo, not the bike.

At least wasn’t alternator. That’s the grand daddy of electrical faults on GS!!

They replaced mine. Still fucking fails to start!

I forgot to add, I also checked the supplied meagre toolkit under the pillion seat for a Torx 25, but the only Torx key under the seat is bigger, probably T30.

So you don’t even carry the means to access the jump start terminal !

My earlier “joke” about the design fault of a missing quick release fastener for the battery cover was correct it seems.

There’s a T25 under my seat - part of the massive tool kit provided by BMW :)

The screwdriver is + at one end and T25 at the other

Gotcha, I stand corrected.

I didn’t think to check that as my previous bike screwdriver was Philips versus flat head.

Thanks for the heads up.

If anybody wants or needs a GB007 Noco connecting cable for their booster pack, this is the best deal I can find, with free UK delivery over £25 included its a good deal and plenty of branches nationally:

Takes the Faff out of jump starting, quite a tidy solution that can also be used for trickle charging the battery using the X-connect adaptor provided (assuming your trickle charger has the proper connector).

Why not run the connector up under the seat. saves having to remove any panels and its out of the way there to.

Something odd i found when i was installing my Noco lithium battery,
They say not to use a jump pack to start a lithium battery vehicle....??
Didnt say why though

Its fine sat behind the cover where I can instantly get to it, it can be used to optimate the battery or jump start easily with no need to remove the seat or panels.

It has a weatherproof cap on the adapter so no worry about rain etc getting in.

Took the GSA off the CTEK charger and used it for this mornings twelve mile commute to work. On arrival at work I grabbed a Fluke62 IR thermometer from our calibrated instrument cupboard and zapped the starter motor, it was at 60 C so pretty hot.

I gave it a few minutes rest then tried to start the bike, it turned over sluggishly then started but didn't exactly bark into life.

Its gonna sit all day and cool so will start okay from cold at teatime, I've got an errand to run after work on the way home so lets see how it hot starts afterwards.
