Bike just died on m3

Awaiting recovery.

2008 gsa, riding along at 70 and just lost power, no warning lights. Recovered to hard shoulder. Bike turns over fine but will not fire. Any ideas?

I wonder what the chances of BMW recovery having one with them are.

Bike is now at Bahnstormer and they suspect a FPC. I'll let you know.

Fair play, I was recovered in about an hour. BMW outsourced to SOS Motorcycle Recovery, not bad for the rush hour on a sunny day.

BMW recovery is excellent! Fair enough as their bikes are the worst in "things to leave you stranded" reliability tat... It makes Piaggio look like the legends of durability.

Re FPC: From now on always carry a spare one on the bike.. Ca £80, a T4 torque key, a phillips screwdriver and you are set... Practice once, it then takes 6-8mins to do the job... Always had one on my GS, but never used it (since the first breakdown that left me stranded) as I got tired of all the other problems that blighted the bike after 20k miles... SO I binned it and is now someone else's problem...

Went back to 1150 and an old VFR800 for good measure... Benchmark bikes, standard values..
 
Always carry the Burnzilla FPC lead under the seat that plugs into the accessory socket on my dash should the dreaded FPC occur as a get me home temp fix.

Must still be bloody worrying though when your bike suddenly dies on the motorway :eek:, bout time BMW fixed this issue once and for all

How embarassing, apparently it's the fuel gauge that was faulty. Reading 3/4 of a tank and was actually empty.

In my defence I'd been away for 3 weeks and this was my time back on the bike so I was pleasantly surprised I'd left it with a nearly full tank and didn't think to look at the trip counter.

Hey ho, live and learn.

I have the same thoughts everytime I go out. Which one is it going to be first, FPC, EWS or FD. Only thing I've replaced so far is a headlight bulb.

To be fair my 54 plate bike has been 100% reliable and I love riding it, especially since I sorted the front end and can now stuff it into corners with complete confidence but there's the the little voice in my head that tells me I should get rid of it before something big goes wrong like the FD.

Alternatively, I could stop reading posts on this forum and live in complete ignorance and possible contentment.:rolleyes:

Then I still have my 13 yr old VFR750 and 8 yr old Africa Twin if the s**t hits the fan with the GS but I know what you mean about benchmark bikes. I still ride these with a spare reg/rec under the seat so nothings perfect.:D

Join the club, I had just picked my 600mile new to me GS up (from a dealer) and just as I was exiting the M4 the bike died. Luckily a friend was with me (also on a GS) and we tipped the bike over and managed to get it started and to a garage. Fuel gauge showed third full, but took 20lts at the pump.

New sender unit, and all was well.

No the underseat one can't but I have a dash mounted accessory socket as well thats wired straight to the battery
 
2010 gsa, 1600 miles, problem still happening. Quarter of a tank showing, 60miles in tank and out of fuel
