Bloody LC crap

I still can't help feeling that BMW are taking the proverbial in recent years regarding build quality and prices, a properly developed bike should not be suffering the post launch problems that the LC models have had . Especially not a one from a so called PREMIUM brand at a PREMIUM price.

My new GSA is due next month but certain things about it make me think am I doing the right thing, for starters the switch gear in all honestly looks well below the standard of any higher specced Japanese bikes and I just hope the finish holds out.

I am paying a lot of money for a bike and having been at the Scottish show I saw a couple of dealers selling brand new pre registered Suzuki DLV 10000 V Stroms with full luggage etc for just over £8000, a hell of a lot of bike for the money and I know that the BMW isn't twice the bike .

I loved my r1150 gs and kept it for 9 years, my r1200gsa tc took a while to gel but I was always aware that the finish never seemed as robust and have always taken extra care to keep on top of it regarding cleaning etc but in certain areas of finish the new LC models just looks CHEAP

Nah...the things are a proper pain to ride on the roads.....they don't "work" untill they're on song...at which point you run out of road/licence/life.....delete according to skill level...:D

For a decrepit old git, lacking in skill like me all the above is true but not all peeps that ride bikes are old, decrepit and lacking in skill ;)

So.....are you saying all sports bike riders buy their bike because it has 170bhp as opposed the their mates that only have 165bhp?

Go and stand next to e few "sports bike riders"....pick those with speed "humps" in their (shiney) leathers with (un-marked) knee sliders...at any "Biker meeting place" and eavesdrop on their conversation...I rest my case.:P

2 new clutches , push rod , cylinder , seals , front wheel , fncking new engine , then another fncking clutch , 1000 more miles running in , another funkin tyre.................
BUT the best part is I LOVE MY NEW 1200 WATERCOLED BM ITS THE FOOKING BOLLOCKS AND WOULD NOT CHANGE A THING ,,,,, moderate that one xx ( nutty )

You are beating me on clutches although I maybe about to catch up. We are neck and neck on engines though. I'm beating you on wheels as I have a new pair fitted.

It's curious how I cut BMW so much slack because riding the bike is good fun and enjoyable plus BMW do not run away when parts need changing.

Additionally no BMW has let me down roadside despite many mates having shaft seals and drives fail.

On a recent 6000 mile trip with 9 bikes in South America across a lot of dusty deserts, weeks at 14000 feet, rough bumpy roads, overloaded and 80 octane petrol no bike failed. That's a collective 54000 miles.

They are expensive but the management bonuses need funding.

Mmmm......natuarly, for guys like you and I that have life sussed, have no ego and have a zen like approach to riding bikes such people are vastly inferior, have no free will and should be pityed so yes, I see where you are coming from.

Maybe I should get a Harley.......................... :P

This often gets quoted about BMW motorcycles but I personally don't agree with it. I see BMW simply as a brand selling at a particular price. The word premium tends to get used far too much IMHO once a customer thinks they either have something better than someone else or, they've bought something they're not happy with.

That would be why I have decided to keep hold of the twin cam as well .

I came from a blackbird to a 1200TC and have rode a LC the blackbird would eat a 1200LC without going above 6k revs smooth as silk and would pull stronger than any GS in any gear hardly a pain to ride on the roads none of the GS range are fast unless you are coming from a FS1E yes they handle very well and pull well for a tractor but they are not fast

on the correct roads , a well ridden GS is very very fast.

Sorry Steve, can't agree one bit with you Re the blackbird.
I did 4 weeks riding with 2 other very fast riders. One on a cb1300 (or 1400 can't remember) and the other a blackbird. I was on a bog standard 1200rt (2009) model.
Everyone managed to keep up with each other, the blackbird yes is quick in a straight line, but the rt had in in the bends and overall had a job sticking with the other bikes.
As has already been pointed out, there's a point at which bikes can only go round a bend so fast on the road and the bmw does make cornering so easy it's brilliant.
Now, the gs has loads more power than that rt had and is certainly quicker in a straight line. It has a better riding position and suspension setup. It's well geared up for fast road riding.
I'd not even worry if a blackbird was trying to get away in front and I was on an rt....
Yes the blackbird has a high top speed, but how often would it get there? I'd say hardly ever and the gs is rapid up to triple figures. Easily a worthy opponent for most other road bikes, if you ride it hard of course

Totally agree. The Honda Pan European is more expensive list that a GS TE and has had no development in the last 1,000 years but no-one bangs on about Honda being "premium" because they also make cheap scooters and 125's.

Having ridden a Blackbird a few times I can remember looking at the speedo whilst tootling along in 3rd on the M4 (nicely under the speed limit sir) and it said 96mph - so in a straight line it's on another planet. The steering was pretty heavy though so I imagine it would have been a nightmare in twisties.

Never had any problems in the bends on the blackbird on my last trip I was on the gs and a mate on a blackbird the speed difference was night and day the gs range are just not fast anyone who thinks they are are just deluded the gs handles well and goes well for what it is but its not fast if it was as good as some say why is it not used in any form of racing IOM dakar racing supermoto or hill climbs yes they are good all round but not the fastest in any situation

I went to the Pyrennese with a group , one had a zzr1400 another a blackbird , they were not capable of keeping up with the LC , the big cruisers were fine on the big roads for the high speeds but apart from that that , unless , strangely they now both own a gs now. It's not about the stellar speeds , the smooth box , the bubble fairings , it's about a bike that gives you soul , a purpose to ride , and above all the priceless smile it puts on your face. I know as the two riders I spoke of now understand and would never go back , and also ride better and faster now . IMHO

Steve, I suppose your definition of fast if different from me then....But i'm hardly deluded.
Any triple figure bike i consider to be fast BUT the GS actually gets there pretty damn quick too, and I consider bikes that get up to speed quickly to be fast bikes too.

Im sure you are good in bends, but the blackbird being quick in a straight line means less than you would think when it comes to road riding. The GS will keep up with most things on the road. I know it hasn't got bags of grunt like a s1000rr or r, or other sports bikes / s tourers, but you have to absolutely thrash it too to get the best out of it, and reading on here, some folks are reluctant to do that to the engine.

I regularly ride with pals who have so called "hyper" bikes. S 1000's and GSXR's. They are all police advanced bikers - they know how to ride very very fast and have to ride day in day out.
The GS can keep up with them. They are all surprised at how they have to work theirs too to keep up in the twisties. Its all good fun, but they would muller the GS on a track.

And the 3rd gear at 96mph bit - all that's showing is that it will do x speed in x gear. Great. My GSXR did 100mph in 1st gear. The GS is still the better bike for fast road riding.
In a drag strip race, im sure the blackbird (yawn) would be a better bike....
