BMW 3rd year garauntee cost

I have just read this thread from beginning to end and can confess to being a little confused (although no more than usual - according to the nice nurse). Two questions really:

Firstly; is the extended offering from BMW exactly what it says on the tin - do you literally get the same warranty/service/cover as the first two years extended for a third, including BMW Emergency Service, European cover etc etc - in fact everything it says in the original glossy little book?

Secondly; one of the posts here says that if you breakdown in Europe and require a warranty repair whilst still abroad, that you have to pay the French/German/Belgian/wherever dealer to do the repair and then claim it back when in the UK. Is that true of the first two years or just the BMW extended warranty, or neither?

P.S. I've also torqued up my lower fork clamp - and they were a bit loose, even though I bought the 15-month-old bike only three weeks ago from a BMW dealer and it had just had its umpty-point safety check.
 
No, not the same, it is an insurance policy, definately does not cover corrosion, you do get european breakdown cover, not sure about having to pay, then claim.
 
Not that long ago (certainly within the last five years.....if I remeber) BMW only gave a one year warranty!! Now living over here in the US we get three years as standard - but I think they do it to help US sales - BMW sell less bikes here in the US than the UK!

Maybe BMW will soon give a three year warranty in the UK as well?

Despite all of this I always found that if there was a genuine faliure with something out of the warranty (and you had a good relationship with your dealer) that BMW would often 'help' - I had a gearbox a clutch and a couple of rear shocks replaced out of the warranty period.
 
While its very commendable people are writing and asking BMW for a 3rd year warranty, best way,I feel to go about it is to agree a deal in principle with a dealer on a new bike then ask dealer if he's prepared to cover 3rd year warranty. If when he declines then ask BMW Direct if they will cover 3rd year or contribute to 3rd year, but be prepared to walk away from deal and tell them so.

My GS12 is June 04 once out of warranty, I service the bikes myself.
So this one has had two DIY Service, saving approx £200 each service no £650 a year warranty insurance, now 3 months into 2nd year warranty insurance £150.

So thats £200+£200=£650+£150 that's £1200 i've saved or not spent (is a glass 1/2 full or1/2 empty).

My GS is now a £5000 bike as against £10000 new. I am enjoying it more the older it gets and the more miles I put on it.

Mark now has a written proposal on his desk from Warranty Direct and it looks as though this will go through.
The BMW Owners Club is after a product that is the equal (or better than) that being offered by BMW themselves.
Mark will let me know when he has reviewed the proposal.
He did say that he would charge around £700 (after all commissions) for a fairly new Ferrari so we should probably expect a smaller premium through Warranty Direct.
We may have to join the BMW Owners Club to gain access to the product but that may be a small price to pay.

Times running out for me. I'm excpecting my 'warranty extension' letter any day now :(

If you want to extend your warranty cover (to varying degrees) are there any alternative solutions? :nenau

Instead you've been hit by a stupidly over inflated purchase price. ;)
 
Hmmm...your quite fortunate that you don't own a BMW M3 CSL (actually the cost is the same for the standard e46 M3), to extend the warranty on my 2004 CSL beyond 3 years costs 1050 pounds per year, plus an additional 250 pounds excess per claim!

The above assumes the mileage is less than 60K. If it's over this (from memory) the additional years warranty is 1800 pounds!!!

As is usually the case, these things are a gamble.
 
3rd Year Warranty

Check carefully as just had renewal for 3 series 320d £600.00 but also includes £100.00 Excess Per Claim!!!!
 
£100 XS is a bit rough if you've already paid £600. Does this apply to the bike policies as well?
 
I was told by dealer that the extended warranty fees were going to 'drop significantly' in 2008. My warranty expired on 31/12/07 and when I contacted BMW Customer service to ask what the fee would be to extend it for a 3rd year (for some odd reason I hadn't received the normal letter of notification), I was quoted £459.

There was also some discussion at the dealership regarding people being able to take out or extend their warranty even after they'd allowed it to lapse provided they paid £25 for a BMW inspection which was needed to confirm that there were no obvious problems or previous history of a problem. Am not too clear on this point but it may be worth asking BMW the question if you've let your warranty lapse and are having a change of mind.

£459 is cheaper than what I paid earlier this year.
 
The cost is going in the right direction I guess. Have read a few posts on here about BMW sorting things for free in the third year if your bike is sub 20k miles. Need to factor that into the equation.
 
1200GS 2005, ABOUT 60,000 MILES ON IT NOW.

i took out the £600 odd warranty at end of year 2 and glad i did.

had a final drive replaced, the universal joint failed ( i mean it sheared in half - which was a biggy, indicator switch unit,erm, i'm sure there was something else - and a brand new battery replaced all free (no excess paid) under the extended warranty with a loan bike when ever mine was in for work.

when it is 3 years old in april i will definately extend the warranty again (£600 is fine) if i keep the bike

(but i will probably trade it in against a new K1200GT or decent 1150RT.....and just keep my 1100GS)

The warranty people will allow this, as long as the lapse is not "too long", and the charge I paid was £53 I think. And I paid rather more than £459. More fool me.

What will be interesting to see if a fourth year warranty becomes available.
