Had a trip to my local dealers yesterday, loads of new bikes all lined up for collection but going nowhere due to the snow.
Now I have been looking around with the intention of buying a GSA.
My question is do dealers just expect you to pay the price they quote? I felt I was getting the " that's the price take it or leave it!!!"
Which seems a bit extreme when you are being quoted nearly £20k for a specced up bike !!
Looking at the BMW website I think you are hard pushed to get a bike at list price, or less, maybe its just me, maybe I should try a different dealer.
Also despite there being loads of apparently secondhand (pre-loved they call them !!) bikes I was only shown one.
All this on a day when I was the only customer, also trade in value on my own bike was disgraceful

This reply is purely based on my own experience of buying two new GSs in a year:

Never pay the retail price. Look for at least 10% off. many people have got more.

Timing is massively important. The end of quarterly sales periods is the best if they are short of sales. So are quiet periods like just before Xmas. The release of significantly new models is normally a good time for bargains on the 'old' one.

Shop around and haggle over accessories and servicing etc.

Selling your old bike privately will always get you more but different dealers will offer you different amounts. You also have the issue when selling privately of trying to time the sale and purchase just right. You also have to store and insure two bikes if this doesn't work out. I got stung 18 months ago with this and will never do it again unless the deal was out of this world.

Never be afraid to push a dealer on a price but be reasonable. You must be prepared to walk away.

If you are buying 2nd hand, that 2 year warranty is VERY important. Non-BMW dealers will sell second hand BMWs at lower prices.

Enjoy it! It can be good fun! Always keep your sense of humour and no-one will be offended by cheeky offers etc.

I'm sure there's plenty more but I think you get the drift.

10% you say. I thought only Nutty got that.

Got a pre registered GSA in February when sales are slow. Paid RRP but got full luggage, sat nav and akro can with the deal.

As has been said before, timing is your friend here.

I hate to see the PX ones going in at such a low price... Got a mate who was offered £8k for a mint 2014 LC with 11K miles on it... they will sell this for £10K plus... Why don't people put them on here mid way, then its win / win for us all?....

I made 3 enquiries to 3 dealers (In Scotland) via telephone. One of whom I bought my last bike from. All promised to return figures via email etc....not a peep. Ill just keep mine then.

got to say, the local one I go to sound like the same set up... I want to pay cash for a bike, but that does not float their boat... they was finance or 3 year HP with buy options at the end.... go in with money and they don't like to talk too long????...

End of March is Quarter 1 of sales , it may even be The dreaded year end of some garages. Either way big kick backs from manufacturers to hit sales. So hold out, you will get a good price

Excellent mate I was going to ask when year end was for most dealers as that’s when I would imagine they will be chasing sales!
As another poster said here dealers seem to be particularly greedy when they are selling 2 year old bikes, some of the prices I have been quoted are eye watering !!!

Last week I sold my 17 plate RT LE for £3,000 more than the dealer offered.

Got £1,100 off my new GSA which arrives this week - allegedly by the dealer but suspect the new screen deal was part of the offer.

If they are tying in a deal to taking out PCP, simply sign on the line and then cancel the finance within 14 days. All you'll be charged is the small amount of daily interest for the days up to when you cancel, and you get to keep the discount. Most certainly, this is how BMW finance works. Suspect they can't be seen to hold you to financial inducements for taking out finance.

As has been said, timing matters, especially in terms of where the dealer/salesman is with their targets.

I got 1.1K off my GS TE, as well as 15% off any packages (luggage, nav, lights) but which was possibly more to do with the incoming cockpit change that was announced a month later.

The other negotiable aspect, for anyone going down the finance road, is apr. Mine's was knocked down by 2%, though in the end I decided to cancel the finance.

Buy it on HP, taking whatever discount is offered, and then exercise your right to cancel.

Not been offered anything yet early days ,but if I am I will take the pcp deal and pay it off in 14 days.

I'm not sure that spring, which seems to produce bigger sales, and new models are available - is the best time to bag a bargain?

But - dealers certainly prefer throwing in luggage or clothing - where the 'apparent' value to the customer is a lot more than cost to them.

You lot have it good , we only have two bmw dealerships here in the south of Ireland, I contacted them both in early january and their starting price was €1800 euro over rrp, I’m still pissed off.

in my experience a good salesman knows when your serious or just tyre kicking. I was straight with him from the start telling what my budget was and that would get me a basic model bike without ESA and all the thrills.

Clearly no bikes are stocked that basic and he advised me that he would have to make a special order for a basic bike and that I would have to wait some time for it. I replied that was fine as I was in no rush.............

24 hours later he offered me a stock bike with all the frills for a little over the basic price and we shook on the deal. He knew I was serious and he knew what I had to spend and did prise a few hundred quid more out of me but not much. A good salesman will do what he or she needs to do to get a sale rather than loose your money to another dealership.

I'm sure he was as happy with the deal as I was other wise he would not have made the offer.

In short be straight with them tell them your budget (don't tell fibs and raise it as and when) If they have stock they want to sell they will try to exchange a bike in their showroom for your cash!

Just my thoughts.

Tried that 4 years ago with an immaculate 3 year old R1200GSA , fsh, low mileage fitted with panniers , extras and Maxton suspension and new tyres , it also had the transfereable BMW extended warranty and I advertised it at mid way between the ridiculous low part ex offer and the dealer selling prices .

Not one enquiry , at the same time an ex work colleague was after a similar bike and paid £3000 more for an almost identical bike from a local dealer that was not as well looked after .

Go Figure , many will happily pay a dealer over the odds.

In the end kept it for another 16 months and still sold it for £1500 more than the initial part ex offer

That was my experience recently on the forum as well. No interest. That 2 year BMW warranty is a private sale killer. I was lucky I think. I managed to get the dealer up to £1000 less than the private sale price. He only put £1000 on top when he put it up for sale after Xmas. It's gone now. Great bike and a relative bargain.
