Had a R1150R in yesterday (along with a dropped valve on a 1200) with a nicely broken can chain guide rail.

The owner was told the bike was a write off due to the costs involved of replacing it by the book, which involves splitting the engine cases  ....

By the end of the day job done and bike repaired using my simplified method... Must have done 20 or so bikes over the last ten years using this method and never any problems :D

I should do a write up for the job...... but no, feck it, let one of the other dealers do something for the good of the forum for a change. :D

The ingenious will always find a way.

That piston crown looks pretty coked-up. Do they always look like that??

Nice to know it can be done. Did you take the head and barrel off or just the head to reach inside?

And why have you puy Christmas pudding on top of that piston? Surely that's gonna foul up the valves?

Steptoe, what were the symptoms of this broken guide? I'd imagine a lot of clattering?

I would have thought , that is the piston out of the bike

Couldn't be sure. He was also repairing a 1200 with a broken valve at the dame time...may have been that piston? But I've seen the other pictures in the 1200 section . Thank god that never happens to the 1150

HI mr steptoe, what is this quick fix , my top right rail has 1" snapped off the end, I am about to split my case in half but if there is a quick fix please tell me more sir, cheers joe

I might have dreamt it but I'll swear there was a thread with photos showing how this was done posted a good few years ago. As I remember it, you remove the head, barrel and piston, break the guide with a sharp chisel where it is bolted to the engine so it can be removed. Then cut a "V" into the upper side of the new guide mounting point and press it onto the bolt. Reassemble barrel etc and away you go. Hopefully someone, preferably Steptoe, will be able to give a more detailed description. I've searched for the origonal post but can't find it. Definatly no need to split the cases.

There is such a thread, but unfortunatly as often happens if the links are not maintained or the author changes his photo hostng site the pictures are lost, this makes the thread not as useful, You will find it here in the ADV site around page three with a link fron Steptoe to his own post (http://65.38.186.190/forums/showthread.php/282821-Help-metalic-knock-tap-on-right-side) The ADV link is http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/the-mystery-of-the-disappearing-cam-chain-tensioner.901745/

I give the ADV site as a link cos there is some useful info if you read the whole thread,

Thats the one!

oh thank you, I was looking at the new rail i got today wondering about if you could cut the top or back as it doesn't seem there is much pressure applied there, I removed the oil pump and that cable bracket on top of engine today (what a swine that was by the way) in preparation to split the engine tomorrow as thought ah just get on with it, I made a cardboard template to make one of them fancy engine stand adapters out of wood, back to the dark ages :),so think I'll just go for it. tryed chris harris method but no way was that pin moving and how to get to that e clip god only knows let alone putting one back on.

FARKOFF Are we talking technical terms here or what? separate perhaps, whats going on, whats the situation ,your freaking me out :D.
