Last weekend I thought I would try Garmin Explore app and create a route (track) on my iPhone

I did a simple 55 mile route from home, in a loop and back again - fairly straightforward & on roads I know well
From A roads to D roads (gated & with grass/gravel up the middle)

I just went dot to dot on my iPhone, with Explore
Easy & quite like Mapsource in fact

I saved it in Explore & named it

Then synched Explore with Drive to export the track (soon to be a route)

Drive then Bluetoothed it to the Zumo XT & there it was….a named track

Tonight I went out on the bike to ride it

Found it in the Tracks section & then set it to Go/Start

It displayed it as a track ….D’oh, without directions going forward …..at the next junction etc

Pulled over and tried to activate it as route…it’s in Apps

I could then convert it from a track to a route …bingo we’re in business

Start the route and away we go

Followed the route perfectly without drama & no glitches

Once I missed a turning and had do a U turn & it went haywire, so stopped the route & closed it, then reopened the route & started again from the closest point

Baby steps

What’s wrong with Explore ?

Nice view of Bilsdale on North Yorkshire Moors

Tip top! Welcome to the 21st century, JB. (y)

You have discovered that a modern Garmin GPS device is very good, enhanced as it has Bluetooth transfer, removing the need to connect the device to a computer. That you’ve also discovered that it can convert a track into a route easily, is just a bonus.

I have no idea why the XT went haywire, when you missed a turning and made a U-turn. I can though guess that you had the device set to ‘Automatic off-route recalculation’. Great that the device sorted itself out when you helped it by stopping the route, then rejoining it at the closest entry point.

I have never used Garmin Explore, so I cannot say if it is good or bad. It does get bad press. But hey, so does BaseCamp, which I find very good. Now try doing the same in MyRoute and see how you get on.

PS Yup, whilst navigable, tracks have no turn instructions in them.

Thanks
Yep I am used to Tracks as off-road we use them and of course aren’t turn by turn, but are quite easy to follow
On the road turn by turn is advantageous
I might now persevere
