Canada on the cheap-ish

The road isn’t really bike friendly, even the marked sharp bends are only gentle curves in reality but it’s difficult to not stop at every viewpoint/layby for pictures.IMG_8132.jpegIMG_8140.jpegIMG_8171.jpegIMG_8120.jpegIMG_8185.jpegIMG_8217.jpeg

Mountaineer Lodge Lake Louise

Popped back to Lake Louise to get a different perspective in today’s weather.

Then a pretty boring drive to Calgary, snow and low cloud disguised the scenery so I got off the highway and drove the fairly boring back roads.
Thought I’d broken something when I opened my door in the underground car park of tonight’s Holiday Inn Express, it was just the ice falling off the car!

The view from our room.

Fantastic idea that I would never have thought of, lift your windscreen wipers if your car is going to freeze up overnight, must try and remember this at home. Most of the cars in the outside car park have done this.

Spent the afternoon yesterday sorting stuff out, Liz washed some clothes in the bath with some previously liberated Tide from a recent hotel. We now have enough clean clothes for the rest of the trip barring any mishaps!IMG_8278.jpeg
Visited the local Safeway supermarket for a hot chicken and salad followed by this lovely lemon meringue.

I am enjoying this, thank you.

Found a tram stop just over the road from our hotel so we got on it, went to the end of the line and travelled back to the southern end of the city centre, got to see a lot of the suburbs from the tram.
Tried blagging my way into the Bow Tower (tallest in Calgary), no luck unfortunately.

Had to make do with Calgary Tower instead, if you’re ever there and aren’t bothered about standing on the glass floor at the top, you can book a table at the revolving restaurant one floor down without having to pay the 21 dollars entry fee.

Had a long chat with the security guy, really interesting person, swapped some great life stories, he also looks a lot like one of my old bosses coincidentally.

Had to have a look in here.

Great photos . This is the 2nd non bike trip I've really enjoyed, the 1st being err, lemme think....was it Lord Snooty's 🤔?

This was Highway 1 Calgary to Banff this morning, -11 degrees, the lake on the right frozen.

Arrived in Banff 2 hours too early to check into our hotel, went there anyway in the hope of leaving the car there.
The guy at reception was great, let us park in the underground heated garage (12 dollars per night) and whe I asked if there was a microwave in the room he said he would get housekeeping to put one in there for us. He suggested the Tunnel Mountain hike would take a couple of hours and our room would be ready then.

Not sure what this is, black squirrel perhaps.

15,543 steps and 71 floors later we arrived back at our hotel pretty much in the middle of Banff.

Popped out to yet another superb supermarket 6 minutes walk away.
The scenery is absolutely stunning as was the apple crumble.

Thursday 26th
Tricky but beautiful drive for the first half today, Highway 1 (Trans Canada Highway) still has a lot of snow and ice, slid about a few times, didn’t tell Liz till we’d reached dry roads.
IMG_0697.jpegIMG_0699.jpegIMG_0698.jpeg

Just the two stops, first at a boardwalk through some beautiful trees and the dam before checking into Basecamp Resorts Revelstoke. Full kitchen, washing machine & tumble dryer (in use as I type).
IMG_8536.jpegIMG_8541.jpegIMG_8543.jpegIMG_8544.jpegIMG_8545.jpegIMG_8546.jpeg
Really wanted to go up the Meadows in the sky parkway but unfortunately it’s closed due to recent weather conditions. Didn’t have 7 hours spare to hike there.

Tonight’s dinner along with the rest of the apple crumble from last night.
