Ive recently aqiured a 1988 gs100 ,anyway Im going away next week for a couple of days and was giving it a once over and I noticed when spinning the rear wheel back and forth you can feel and here a definite clunk coming from the bevel end ,I loosend the boot at the gearbox end and the uv joint looked and felt fine so I held it from moving and again rocked the wheel and ther was defo some movement in the rear of the final drive .Do they have some play in them ,or should I leave it in the garage and take my ST.I also noticed Oil in the top boot I take it the Gearbox seal could be Knackered but as it had a recon gearbox fitted I wonder if they have put one from a mono in it .Any advice on checking the shaft and bevel would be most apprieciated .Cheers

With the boot at the gearbox end of the leg peeled back - you can see the oil seal in behind the drive flange . . .

If its like this - green or brown with the lips facing outwards - its a Mono-lever Seal. The small triangular vent at the top of the seal should be left open in a Monolever box.

On the other hand if it looks like this - brown and with the lips facing inwards - its a Paralever seal. Note the small triangular vent at the top of the seal should be blocked-off with sealant in a Paralever box :thumb.

Regarding the 'clunk' from the bevel drive . .

You seem to have ruled out the top/forward UJ, but there is another one at the bevel drive end.

There is also a splined coupling between the shaft and the bevel drive.

I suggest you remove the lower boot and investigate - though, from memory you won't see much without separating the bevel drive from the swing arm :blast. You'll need heat to get the pivot pins out - I shattered a 12mm Allen drive trying to do it cold.

If the shaft is OK, the bevel drive might need shimming or new bearings & shimming. I recall Steptoe put a post up a couple of years ago showing that this needed some special tools to remove the bearing retaining collar.

Alternatively - Just ride the thing and stop worrying until something breaks - then you'll know what's wrong :D.

Bob your a gent ,ill check the seals on the box as you describe .I went on to Adventure Rider and one guy (Stagehand)said that there is an initial clunk when you spin the wheel forward of maybe 1to 2 inch outer wheel travel then the wheel should spin nice and smoothly with no roughness ,mines is lovely and smooth after the initial take up .Im gonna do as you say and ride It .Cheers :beerjug:

He's right, a touch of slack as all the splines/UJ's etc load up. Re the oil, usually ( although there shouldn't in theory ) most owners will find a splodge of oil in the gaitor immediately behind the gearbox....just drain and enjoy :thumb2 Oh, doubtful if you will be able to see the seal in the rear of the gearbox..flange, swingarm and your big head stop you being able to look in there.
