Gearbox coming out this week for seals to be replaced under warranty - no probs just some tell tale leaks

Considering changing clutch at same time bike is June 05 with 21k on clock

However bits (friction plate, pressure plate and something else - thrust bearing?) is £300 - at which point I decided not to replace

what would you do......

I would get the clutch changed under warranty as well .I did!

The leaking oil gets on to the clutch plates causing the slip under high revs.:thumb

Obviuosly it depends on the type of riding you do and your style of riding but even so isn't 21k a bit too soon to be replacing the clutch, even given the potential saving in labour costs later down the line.

I would hope for 40-50k out of a clutch or am I being a bit optamistic :nenau

When the back end of my bike was stripped out for the third time, I had new friction plates put in as they were fairly well worn at 18k (lots of london riding). The cost of the parts was £75 from memory.

If you have the oft reported problem with the output shaft seal then as has already been mentioned in this thread your clutch should be changed as part of the fix as the oil will have contaminated the clutch. I think if you search for this topic you will find several peeps have had this problem.

Just imagine - the dealer could also put in a claim from bmw for the oil contaminated clutch.

And you also pay for the same clutch.

Blimey, that would be a nice bonus for a dealer.

Good job they'd never think of doing such a thing :augie

Well, we know the way your mind works!

Some dealers will replace the clutch without quibble, others will want to see that the oil has got to the clutch plates because you can tell if it has.

Clutch wear? Never had to replace a clutch on a car or a bike during my lifetime, mbut then I've never had a vehicle with more than 100k on the clock. But 20k? If it went that early its either a guarantee claim or drivng lessons to my mind.

Mine went off by 28k miles.

When I went to the dealer to complain I was told that they are replacing many at that mileage.

It's nothing to do with needing driving lessons.

It's more to do with using a single dry plate clutch and the fact that on bikes we use the clutch for control much than you do in a car.

If you then add in the type of riding you so, it's easy to wear a clutch. For example if your main trips are a slow busy commute to a big city you're gonna be wearing your clutch much more than a 150 miles cross country bimble.

What's a real pain is that unlike most Jap bikes I've had, the BMW clutch is a bitch to replace.

Blackbird clutch replace in under 45 mins ... R1150GS anything up to 8 hours!

Fair enough Droopy - obviously if you are using the bike off road then you will wear out the clutch much more quickly, but you will be doing no more clutch slipping in heavy traffic than you would in a manual car.

If the dealers are replacing clutches at 30k then I dont think its acceptable quality.

thanks

clutch not slipping and so I'm not going to replace, will call in and inspect when the box is out (more interested to see how top get the g'box off)
