My clutch has been going for a while now and coming to the time where I have to replace, gotten a couple of quotes 750 and 825 euro for complete replacement , my wallet says try and do it yourself ... But don't want to start it and end up scratching me head with loads of spare parts left over after reassembly , have many tried this ? I am fairly ok with the tools, just wonder is a Haynes manual and YouTube enough to carry this off?
it's a lotta cash

If you type your heading "clutch replacement" into the search on here you get about 90 results-have a look there first!

dont get carried away with the haynes manual and the rest, some times they dissasemble to much.the whole back end inc subframe wheel and drive shaft assembly can be removed in one piece.has your bike abs? if no its just become a tad more easy

Doing mine in a few months time over winter, I hope it's just the friction plate.

All that work and you want to just replace one part of the clutch!

John

It's only a few hours tinkering, plus the full clutch kit is the thick end of £400 as compared to £70 for the friction plate. It's not like I'm rebuilding a warship. :rolleyes

£400 plus seems a high price for a clutch kit? £228 for complete 1100 clutch from Sherlocks for me last year, are the 1200's that much more expensive?

Wise to replace all of the clutch when doing the job, or you may be pulling it all apart again in 10,000 miles or less :eek

.

Yes, the 1200 clutch is THAT much, a rip off IMHO. It's clearly nothing special in its construction and not that dissimilar to earlier bikes.

If you consider how many 1200's including RT/ST/GS/HP2 have been made, economies of scale ought to now be reducing the price of a clutch but it hasn't happened and I smell profiteering.

The friction plates can wear quickly or glaze if ridden hard. If I had to strip again after another 10,000 miles that's still about two years for me between clutch changes, so the second change would be a full kit anyway and I would have got two years riding out of the £70 for the friction plate. I will strip and inspect before ordering parts in case I have no choice except fitting a full clutch.

FWIW I am the second owner and I got clutch slip early after purchasing and have nursed it for the past 10,000 miles, I think the slip is due to a hard life causing premature wear to the friction material.

To the OP, go to the 1200 section stickies and look at the clutch change in pictures by Spike or use the link in Fringe's post above, it should show you what is required in plenty of detail from somebody who has done the job (unlike me!).

Your right, now checked out prices for 1200's  I would be looking to economise at those prices! Friction plate and pressure plate are the wear components and would look to replace them, would skim the other plate if necessary, without looking into it to deeply it seems if you have a pre 06 bike the pressure plate needs to be replaced with a post 06 version and needs a pushrod change!

The 1200 clutch hardware is a way bit different to the 1100/1150 clutches.

The 1200 incorporates the flywheel and starter ring gear with the pressure plate. ;)

And yes, replace the whole lot if you're going to change it.

Using just one new part against the older parts isn't a good idea.
And if/when you do need to do the job again the new parts you've used will be fecked so it'll cost you more than if you replaced all the parts to begin with :D

The sage speaketh with words of wisdom and experience as usual, and it makes sense. Better save up my £396 plus postage.

The sage doth indeed speak correctly. I bought a super dooper all singing and all dancing Wunderlich clutch plate which works even with oil contamination off this very site for less than half price. Bargain or so I thought until Jonno at ABW said I should change the lot in there whilst the bike was in half.......ouch:blast Still, the clutch is beautifully light now:thumb2

How much does the super dooper all singing and all dancing Wunderlich clutch plate add to the cost of a 1200 clutch replacement job?
