Comfy old boots bike service resto thread

You can get that Hammerite in a spray
Better option?

I’m stuck again. Need a slide hammmer to get this off so I can release the swing arm and replace the gator. More money… saw a yank drift it out from the other side but just off the phone with someone I trust and that is a big no no. So, I’ll leave that there for the moment.

Think I’ll clean and replace the brake pads. Then change the oil filter and oil. I vastly underestimated how long this would take. Or how much it would cost. My uncle used to say about any diy job, cost the materials and time. Double the materials and triple the time! He wasn’t wrong

What's the concern with drifting out? I have done that with no probs. I doubt you will need a lot of force.

Don’t want to damage it. Seems rusted in place too. Stupid vanity nippy Norman cover- if the stupid thing was designed properly the drain hole would he on the bottom 🤪

Used this combo with three decent whacks and it didn’t budge. It’s soaking in penetrating fluid and I’ve tried a bit of heatIMG_6798.jpeg

Brakes are in perfect shape too! Ready to tour Europe!

I lost of the the tiny clips that hold onto the bar. Critical?

Oil and filter changed.
15w 50.

No, don’t start talking about oil thank you.

Mmm. Tasty.

Discovered I have not had an oil filler washer in oh, over five years? Explains why I kept losing oil. I thought it was the gaskets but suspect it was the large missing o ring.

Air filter and gear box oil tomorrow.

My new crash bars arrived! Whoohoo!

Seeing as I’m on my holidays, I’m going to clean up and go for a couple of pints in the pub. I’m hoping someone will lend me a slide hammer!

I also will be reading up on how to operate a JCB. I want to make the most of my experience.

Finally, here is flash - one of two kittens. They got neutered two weeks ago and are wearing little suits to protect their tummy’s. Flash has been keeping a firm eye on proceedings since she had her breakfast. In between naps of course!

Ment to send this this morning but put in wrong srction

Morning. Nice morning here in Dublin. Pesky seagulls have been hanging around of late. Worse than the magpies if that is possible.

Right. Let’s start with the fork dust covers.

Job done. I do NOT like the look of the fork seals. The left side is particularly bad. Not leaking but I’d say it’s a matter of time. I cleaned up as as bed I could with tips and acf 50. That’s going to worry me now. Will pick some up and do at my leisure. Need some new top plastic covers too these are uber soft. Anyway a few photos.

Use Cobalt drill bits for drilling out studs and try to drill on a slow speed, slow and steady wins the race ;-)
Also cool the tip of the drill bit every now and then by dipping into some water.

This thing is rusted solid. IMG_6781.jpeg

Going to find a slide hammer. Worried about the state of the bit we are looking at and the bearing behind it. If only nippy Norman made the cover with the drain hole on the BOTTOM not the SIDE

GOBSHITES

zoom in. It looks really rusted

You shouldn't need a a slide hammer for that pin. Take out the 3 torx bolts, bolts, screw one into the centre hole and and it should pull out easily with a pair of pliers.

Dude it’s welded into there!

The nippy Norman vanity screw in cover had its drain hole on the side.

I am worried the outer bit is fused to the frame and the bearing. I’ll try your suggestion in the morning though.

I’ve tried pouring a kettle of water over the outside the expand it a bit. I’ve tried driving it out from the rear. I watched a guy literally pull his out with his fingers. Zoom in look st the rust!

I’ll try pliers and a bit of wriggling. I’ve a few ideas going on.

I’ll try some heat too. Like a flame. Must add a peaning hammer to my shed. I’ve medium big. Massive and rubber but no small tap tap tap release you bollox hammers

You have to remove the three screws first.
I'm in Navan and can lend you a slide hammer I got made for that very job.

🤣

The three screws came out 🤣

Thanks for the offer of the slide hammer. I’ll just buy one. Had a good exchange with a neighbour. Put an APB out on the estate WhatsApp! Long story short I signed off with

Put the plastic back on. Temp fitted my really bad spots! I’ll move them but they will give a little more presence on the road. Tried making my own slide hammer! It didn’t work. Away tomorrow so that me until Monday morning. About to order a slide hammer. If that dies not work I’m not sure what to do.

Few little bits coming next week and I’ll get it back together.

Bought a slide hammer. Arriving Monday. This doodah has an m6 thread. The slide hammer has an m16 with an adapter down to m12.

I’m looking for an m16/12 female to m6 adapter. No idea where to get one. Anyone any ideas?

I have a good idea nip out and get CBR 46’s slide hammer he got made for the job🤔
And how do I get there?!

It’s also 2 hours round trip there and back x 2, thanks for the sound offer Cbr 46. I now want my own slide hammer. Neither a lender nor borrower be.

Just a bit frustrated. I was hoping next week would be lots of spins. Plan on using the adapter supplied with the slide hammer and get an m6 welded to it. Guess I’ll be out to Duffys for parts then depending on the condition of the rusted msss…

I'm not entirely sure why but your comment has hit a nerve and has pissed me off. Have a lovely weekend.
